oh, the speed of a year

Just watched the Doctor regenerate! I'm really looking forward to seeing Matt Smith as Eleven (plus his pretty, pretty companion), I have to say. I'm kind of tired of David Tennant's face.

In other news, the Yuletide author reveal's happened, so here's what I wrote:

London, Under a Raincloud (Imagine Me & You, Luce/Rachel)
Unwritten (FlashForward, Janis Hawk, kind of femslashy gen)

I'm not reposting them over here because I'm lazy (and I don't really expect anyone to be interested) but I think you can comment without an AO3 account, should you wish.

Also, because I'm totally self-indulgent and like to blather on about my writing, I thought I'd do that 'Fic I've Written This Year' meme (except it's last year now, but whatevs).

Fic written in 2009:
Only Time to Lose (Skins; Naomi/Emily)
Dominoes (Skins; Naomi/Effy, Naomi/Emily)
sewn to a tremendous shadow (Skins; Katie/Emily)
A Fear of Falling Under (Skins RPF; Lily/Kat)
A Rapid Imagination (Skins; Naomi/Emily)
[livejournal.com profile] 2ndyearstories (Skins; ensemble)
Unwritten (FlashForward; Janis Hawk)
London, Under a Raincloud (Imagine Me & You; Luce/Rachel)
The Gravity of You (Skins; Katie/Effy)
unfinished 80s AU of DOOM (Skins; Katie/Effy)

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

Waaay more. I think in 2008 I wrote maybe 20k of fic; I had no idea that a new fandom would devour me and I'd end up writing about 110k of fic (30k of which has yet to be posted, but I'm still counting it).

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2009?

Um, all of it? Well, I might have predicted writing Imagine Me & You fic for Yuletide, but Skins wasn't even on my radar at the start of the year.

What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?

Actually, my favourite story *is* one of my most popular: A Rapid Imagination, my ridiculous Jane Austen AU. I just think it worked, and I'm really happy that I managed to pull off something so ridiculous. My other favourite is the 80s AU that I've haven't posted yet (SORRY).

Now, what's your most popular story?

Probably either Only Time to Lose or A Rapid Imagination; they both got similar amounts of comments. (OMG, breaking onto three pages of comments made me so happy!)

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Second Year Stories was definitely out of my comfort zone. It was NaNo, and putting stuff out there that I knew was far from perfect was really scary, but it was also the first time I've written an ensemble fic. I learnt that juggling nine characters and all their storylines was fucking difficult. :D

From my past year of writing, what was...

Best story

There are a couple I'm proud of but I think in terms of the quality of the prose, I'd say that Dominoes is the best. I spent a long time on it trying to get it right, and I'm mostly really pleased with how it turned out.

Most under-appreciated by the universe

I'm going to say Dominoes again here. My Yuletide fics also haven't got a whole load of comments, but I think that's probably because they're not very good. :D

Most fun

This one's easy: A Rapid Imagination, by a million miles!

Most disappointing

I think A Fear of Falling Under turned out kind of blah. Also, The Gravity of You wasn't anything like what I wanted it to be. (I blame this on the fact that all I've been craving lately is like, completely ridiculous Katie/Effy domestic schmoop. I'm not kidding; I would read the shit out of Katie/Effy curtain!fic right now. So, while it didn't turn out like that, it was definitely more "cute" than I wanted it to be.)

Story that could have been better

Oh man, Second Year Stories could have been a LOT better. I mean, I have the NaNo excuse obviously, but I think the Naomi/Emily storyline was kind of made of fail, and there were some real problems with the plotting and pacing. I think [livejournal.com profile] holeybubushka said that it could have just been all about the JJ/Katie/Effy triangle, and... that's true. When I first started thinking about the fic I thought it would be impossible to fill 50k, but I soon discovered that I didn't have nearly enough room to tell the story I wanted to tell, so a lot of the storylines suffered.

Most sexy

Porn is my least favourite thing to write, on account of the fact that I suck at writing it. So, none of them are all that sexy. There's a bit of sex in Only Time to Lose which isn't altogether horrible, so maybe that one?

Story with the sweetest moment

Hmm. Probably the 80s AU, actually; at least, that's the story I can reread parts of and squee about how much I ship them, even if it probably doesn't fit in with the normal definition of "sweet".

Story that made you cry

Um, I don't think I've ever cried over something I've written, although I got all kinds of sad writing the penultimate part of Second Year Stories, where Naomi and Emily went their separate ways.

Hardest to write

Oh, God. Second Year Stories was VERY difficult, what with juggling all the characters and having such an insane deadline, and then there were parts of Only Time to Lose that were like pulling teeth.

Easiest to write

A Rapid Imagination flowed very easily - somehow I just really got into the style and had a ball with it. I didn't actually expect anyone else to like it, but I amused myself a lot when I was writing it.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story

None of them! I mean, sewn to a tremendous shadow is incest, but it's so mild. All the really pervy stuff stays in my head. ;)

Most unintentionally telling

LOL, IDK. I feel like other people should answer this question!

Most overdue

UM, POSSIBLY THE 80S AU OF DOOM? I think I'd more or less finished it by mid-September, and I still haven't done the last few bits of editing and research. *facepalm*

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most

I was going to say something silly but okay, serious answer: I think the theme that most often comes up in my writing is ending on a beginning. I think I actually spelt it out in A Fear of Falling Under, but it's something I do a lot. Maybe Second Year Stories demonstrates it most, with Naomi and Effy going off into the unknown.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

My profic goal is to get onto a Creative Writing MA course, hopefully at UEA.

Fic goal: FINISH THE 80S AU. I'm quite sure that at this stage it won't be worth the wait, but it would be nice to finally release it into the wild.
