- Finally after like a million years I got myself a new LJ layout, updated my profile and uploaded an amazing new animated Glee moodtheme. I'm not sure if this is actually going to correspond with me being more active on LJ, but I hope so! I think I need to friend a bunch of people in Glee fandom but I always find it kind of difficult to get involved with a new fandom like that. Lurking is so much easier.

- How awesome was the Game of Thrones finale? The day after I watched it I went out and bought the first book; I wasn't planning on reading them because I like being surprised by the TV show, but there's no way I can last until next year without finding out what happens next.

- I assume everyone is as excited as I am about Pottermore? I don't know if it'll actually turn out to be as awesome as it sounds but right now it looks like it's going to be very cool.

- I'm still really enjoying Pretty Little Liars, but UGH, can we please get rid of Samara already. She's SO BORING; they obviously didn't bother to characterise her beyond "nice girl for Emily". Also, she looks like she ought to be cute and yet somehow isn't. Bring back Paige and her serial killer bangs, please.

- Has anyone else been watching The Voice? I'm kind of in love with Dia Frampton.

- Apparently [livejournal.com profile] femslash11 assignments are being sent out at the moment, although I haven't received mine yet. I'm looking forward to it; it's always one of my favourite fic exchanges, and I can't wait to start writing. :D Just received it! And it's going to be a bit of a challenge, but that's definitely a good thing.

- You know you spend too much time on Tumblr when you try to reblog an LJ post. *facepalm* (The post in question was this, the first xkcd comic to make me laugh out loud in ages.)

- I, uh, may or may not be currently downloading the first episode of The Glee Project, the no doubt terrible reality show about finding a new Glee cast member. DON'T JUDGE ME.

- I've been watching and completely loving Game of Thrones, just like apparently everyone else is. Very spoilery comments about 1x09 )

- From the sublime to the ridiculous: SO EXCITED FOR NEW PRETTY LITTLE LIARS TONIGHT. (Well, tomorrow for those of us unfortunate to have to download it.) I know it's not been very long since season one ended, but I MISS IT.

- I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] femslash11, one of the ficathons that can regularly persuade me to actually write fic. Not that I haven't been writing fic lately - I've probably written ~15k of various different Glee fics, but the trouble is that I hate everything I've written. There's one thing that I might post, but it's been so long since I've posted fic that I've slipped back into the mindset where I find it hugely nerve-wracking to actually post. IDK, I'll try and get over it because I really would like to be more active in Glee fandom.

- Um, that's it. How are you, flist?

Wow, it's been ages. I feel like I should post more, but then I never have anything much to say.

I've... kind of given up on Skins. Both versions. I'm one episode behind on US Skins and two behind on UK Skins and I don't really have any motivation to catch up with either of them. Maybe I'll catch up with US Skins eventually if I hear that they've sorted out the Tony/Tea fuckery, but IDK.

In RL news, you know how my whole job situation was up in the air? IT STILL IS. But it looks potentially positive, because the organisation might have more funding? IDK, I have no idea what's going to happen, but I'm going to be there at least through to the beginning of April, so that's something.

Back to fandom news: I seem to have accidentally become OBSESSED with Glee, which was careless of me. I mean, don't get me wrong: I am well aware of the many and varied ways in which it sucks out loud, and I still rage at it on a regular basis, but Santana Lopez just snuck up on me and made me fall in love with her. IT WASN'T MY FAULT. So I've been gorging myself on schmoopy slightly-OOC Brittany/Santana fic these last couple of days, and I find myself ridiculously excited about the next episode. Spoilers )

LOL, I am so not proud of any of this. GLEE SUCKS. I'm hoping it will be one of those random brief obsessions I occasionally get with a new fandom that never lasts, but WHO KNOWS. I already have the urge to write fic.

Oh, also, in my travels around Glee fandom I found this picture: cut! )

AND NOW I NEED SOME RPF.
botherd: (gaga: rah rah ah-ah-ah)
- I had a dream last night that I was hanging out with Lady Gaga (in a toilet stall, wtf). I was totally embarrassing myself by going on about how I can't wait for Born This Way to premiere on Friday, but that is ACTUALLY A LIE - I hate the awful, clunky, kind of racist lyrics and am worried that the song is going to suck. (I am still kind of excited though. But also nervous. And also overthinking this a ridiculous amount, wtf self.) /cool story bro

- Work is completely ridiculous at the moment. We're having a ~government minister~ (not one you'll have heard of) visit next week, so we have to prepare all this stuff and fawn over her and everything even though HER FUCKING GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO LEAVE A QUARTER OF US UNEMPLOYED BY THE END OF THE MONTH.

- I spent most of the weekend rewatching Pretty Little Liars. OH MY GOD, I LOVE THIS RIDICULOUS SHOW. It's probably my favourite thing on air at the moment, ngl. After the last episode I've really started shipping Spencer/Emily, because Emily needs an awesome girlfriend and no one is more awesome than Spencer. "I WILL DESTROY HER." ♥ Is there any fic? I feel like this show ought to have a sizeable femslash fandom but I haven't really seen anything. (Uh, not that I've really looked.)

- Um, that's it. How are you, flist?
botherd: (hermione)
- So, Happy New Year, I guess! I think my fannish New Year resolution is to WRITE MOAR, although we'll see how it goes. There are a few things I have vague ideas for, but I'm so bad at actually getting round to writing them.

- About a million years after everyone else, I saw Harry Potter! (Actually the cinema was really surprisingly full, so I guess lots of other people hadn't got round to seeing it yet.) Needless to say, it was awesome; I'd forgotten just how much I love these characters, and I spent a large part of it just squeeing over the trio. ALSO, totally shipping Harry/Hermione, which came as a surprise. (DANCING, OMG. ♥) And then at the end I totally shipped Bellatrix/Hermione, just for how wrong it was.

- I'm more excited than I should be about Pretty Little Liars starting up again tomorrow, although I can't really remember what happened in the last episode. I think I need to rewatch, although all my TV watching time at the moment is taken up with rewatching Downton Abbey. I LOVE THAT SHOW SO MUCH. I actually think I might write fic for it, because Sybil/Gwen needs to happen.

- There's a bunch of Yuletide fic that I still need to read, but for some reason I always find myself less likely to read Yuletide stuff post-reveal. Am I just weird, or are other people like this too? It's like between Christmas and New Year there's all this mad Yuletide excitement and it just evaporates on New Year's Day.

- I can't believe Gaga's new album isn't going to be out until fucking MAY. How am I supposed to survive?! D:
botherd: (harry at the window)
- *pokes last post* Anyone else want fic? I just want lots of excuses to write!

- Stuff I am inordinately excited about: SMASH HITS LADY GAGA SPECIAL, OH MY GOD. (I'm sure people who didn't grow up with Smash Hits won't understand why this is potentially so amazing, so you'll just have to trust me that it is.) If there's not a biscuit tin interview I will be v. disappointed.

- I'm getting pretty fed up with the snow already, even though a) we haven't had a huge amount where I am, and b) I got to leave work an hour early today. The fact that I've started finding snow annoying instead of fun is a sign that I'm getting old, isn't it? :(

- Random TV rec of the day: BOARDWALK EMPIRE. Is anyone watching it? If not, you should be - it's this new HBO show about Prohibition-era gangsters and it's awesome. Honestly, I only started watching it because I heard there were lesbians (I know, I know, I'm rolling my eyes at myself too) but the whole thing is brilliant, not just that storyline.

- I still haven't seen Deathly Hallows yet. FAIL.

- I've just realised how close Skins gen 3 and US!Skins are. How has time passed so quickly? It seems like fandom is way more excited about US!Skins, which is kind of hilarious considering the initial reaction. Is anyone actually looking forward to gen 3 at all, or is everyone just expecting it to be shit?
botherd: (keira laughing)
In the process of reading through all the Dear Yuletide Writer letters I've stumbled across a prompt that is EXACTLY what I want to write for Yuletide, to the point where I've already started planning out a fic. *facepalm* And now I'm pre-emptively disappointed that I'm most likely not going to be assigned that request! (I have been considering narrowing down my eight offers to four, the minimum, but I realise that attempting to game the system in that way is a) against the spirit of Yuletide, and b) not likely to work anyway.)

I would just write an extra treat for that person but it's the sort of fic that would really need a lot of research and I wouldn't want to sideline my actual assignment.

OH MY GOD WHY AM I WORRYING ABOUT THIS BEFORE ASSIGNMENTS HAVE EVEN GONE OUT. /ridiculous

In other news, for some reason I had a Glee-related dream last night. It involved Cory Monteith and Mark Salling randomly deciding to switch characters, so Cory was playing Puck and Mark was playing Finn. It was as hilariously terrible as you would imagine.

Don't think I'm going to get any writing done today, which will put me a day behind. :( But still, I don't work Fridays so catching up over the weekend shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully on Sunday I'll be able to go to the write-in near me, which will be a great opportunity to get loads of words down.

- Please tell me there's new Fringe tonight (/tomorrow for me). I miss Olivia Dunham's face.

- NEW WONDERFUL PATRICK WOLF SONG OF AMAZINGNESS. ♥ ♥ Honestly, I wasn't entirely convinced at first, but it's definitely a grower. I spent the first few listens going "Wahhhhhh it doesn't sound like a Patrick song" and then it SNUCK UP AND HIT ME OVER THE HEAD WITH ITS FABULOUSNESS. IDK if anyone else cares but you SHOULD.

- NaNo starts in less than five days and my main character STILL DOESN'T HAVE A NAME. D: Or, well, she has a name, but it's not the perfect name, it's just a name that'll do. And that's basically the same thing as not having a name at all.

- I feel like I've been shirking my duties as a Skins fandomer by not commenting on the US Skins trailer! Mostly I think it's going to be super weird for the first few episodes that are basically remakes of series one, but I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes once it branches off. And of course I'm mostly interested in Tea, because, well, you already know my feelings on cute lesbians. Also, I love how fandom's already shipping her with Michelle, but I just have one request: please, fandom, don't start calling them something stupid like ~*Teachelle*~. JUST SAY NO TO NAME-SMOOSHES.

- Who's watching Lip Service?? It can't exactly be described as quality TV and yet I'm enjoying the hell out of it, probably because after The L Word the bar for lesbian TV is set so low you can step over it. Anyway, brief thoughts: Frankie is SO HOT but her emo is tedious, I like Cat but she needs to pull herself together, and Tess is my favourite even though sometimes her storylines hit my embarrassment squick hard. And I LOVE Tess and Lou together, even though Lou's awful to her. :/

- I've had 'I Wanna Be Like You' in my head intermittently throughout the week and it's all Katie Fucking Waissel's fault. Why is The X Factor trying so hard to make her happen? She's not going to happen.
botherd: (Default)
So, who's watching The X Factor this year? I'm hooked yet again, not that that's particularly surprising.

Thoughts on the top 12 )

So, who are your favourites? Do you think the finalists are better than last year's frankly quite dreadful lot?
botherd: (gaga: rah rah ah-ah-ah)
- I just randomly caught the last half an hour of The Pandorica Opens on BBC3 while I was having dinner, and holy fuck, I think I'd forgotten quite how perfect that episode was. Between that and the amazing Doctor Who/Skins crossover fic I received from [livejournal.com profile] femslash10 and suddenly hugely in the mood for MOAR WHO. Why is it not Christmas yet?? Also, after having watched The Pandorica Opens again I now NEED to rewatch the finale.

- Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] femslash10 (as I was, kind of): the fic I just posted for it was the first thing I'd posted in nearly EIGHT MONTHS. That's terrible! I need to write more, but it's difficult as I'm kind of ~between fandoms~ right now. There are a bunch of shows and ships I'm interested in, but I don't feel like I'm actually IN any particular fandom at the moment. :(

- I love this picture of Gaga: Cut! )

SHE'S SO CUTE AND SURPRISINGLY NORMAL-LOOKING AND WEARING GLASSES, BE STILL MY HEART. ♥

- Album rec for anyone who likes amazing synth-pop: Happiness by Hurts, album out next week but it's already leaked, of course. So so good, I've been listening to practically nothing else since it leaked. Also, one of their videos features lots of hot women in suits. That's probably relevant to a few people's interests. ;)

- I'm so looking forward to all the American TV shows that are about to start up again. Has anyone heard about any new shows that are meant to be particularly good? I feel like picking up some new ones (you can never have too many fandoms!) but have no idea where to start.

- Work tomorrow, ugh. DNW.
botherd: (tweedy)
- So, how about that X Factor autotune scandal, eh? I'm well aware of all the manipulation and general fuckery that goes into making the show - my favourite part of Saturday's episode was when they showed obvious plant Katie Waissel in the queue, asking the people standing right in front of her how long they'd been queuing - but somehow I'm still surprised that they'd stoop so low. I doubt the uproar will damage the show in any significant way but I hope they quietly stop using autotune at the very least.

- You know I mentioned the other day that I left my umbrella on the bus? Probably no one remembers. ANYWAY, today I saw a woman with the exact same umbrella as the one I lost, and while I wasn't close enough to tell if it was mine (there's a dent in the spike so it would've been easily recognisable) I think it might've been. I live in a small town and I've never seen anyone else with the same umbrella in the year or so I've had it, so basically I've convinced myself that she took it.

OH MY GOD, I'M SURE NO ONE CARES ABOUT MY LOST UMBRELLA. It was a really nice one, though.

- Reason #293484739 why Lady Gaga is my favourite ever: when she becomes the most followed person on Twitter she doesn't just generically thank her fans in a tweet, she makes an adorkable video about it. I love her; she's so ridiculous. Speaking of Gaga, this is a really good article about just one of the ways she's awesome (and is slightly more srs bsns than 'she makes lulzy Youtube videos').

- It's my birthday on Thursday. I'm going to be twenty-two, OMG I'm so old, etc. etc. Still wondering when I'm going to turn into a Proper Adult because I really don't feel like one yet.
botherd: (rufus: silhouette)
- Today at work my boss spoke to me and told me that a) I'm doing an awesome job, b) my contract which expires in a couple of weeks is going to be renewed at least through to March, and c) she's trying to get more funding so she can pay me more. I THINK THIS COUNTS AS A GOOD DAY. \o/

- Although I did stupidly leave my umbrella on this bus this evening. My nice one. Not impressed, self.

- Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] ems: Some Justin Bieber song slowed down by 800%. ACTUALLY AMAZING. No, really, I've been listening to it for the past twenty-five minutes.

- I'm making good progress on my [livejournal.com profile] femslash10 fic, finally! Not entirely convinced it isn't shit, but I'm kind of having fun with it at least.

- Is anyone else watching Covert Affairs? I marathoned the first five episodes (can you marathon only five episodes?) and I'm enjoying it even though objectively it's not that good. Mostly I just like it as a stopgap while I wait for my other shows to start up again - so, the lulzy spy capers will do until Chuck comes back, and the sisterly relationship will do until Fringe comes back, etc.

- Speaking of awful television, I'm kind of stupidly looking forward to The X Factor starting up again next Saturday. IDK WHY, because usually I don't like any of the contestants and the judges annoy me and the song choices are dreadful, but still I always get really into it. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.

botherd: (true blood: jessica is stupidly pretty)
- I had a dream last night where I made out with Jessica from True Blood. It was kind of awkward and not nearly as awesome as it should have been. THANKS, SUBCONSCIOUS. :/

- Remind me why I sign up for fic exchanges? I'm already starting to freak out about my [livejournal.com profile] femslash10 story. The deadline's still a month away, but all I have is half an outline for a story that feels like it's going to be long.

- I think it's nice that Joe McElderry came out (for those that don't know, he won the last series of The X Factor), but I can't believe how overblown the whole thing was. Most gay male popstars have one ridiculously splashy "I'M GAY" tabloid headline, but Joe had TWO. Have we not moved on from that sort of thing now? It all feels very 1999.

- Zac Efron is ridiculously pretty. I have such a weird platonic crush on him (also on Matt Bomer, oh my God. How is he even real?). You know how straight girls have girlcrushes? Yeah, it's like that.

- The other day I came up with an idea for an original story that I feel just may be my Big Idea That Actually Goes Somewhere. (Of course, I usually think that about my original ideas, and they never are.) It's like a dystopian/sci-fi YA thing and I feel like it actually has a lot of potential, but I actually have no clue how to go about writing a novel outside of the constraints of NaNoWriMo. I don't know if I can stick with a project for that long, especially now I have less time to write.

- I hear the new Sherlock series is good. Is it? I'm not really in a rush to watch yet another story about two straight white dudes, but I might give catch up with it online if I can be bothered.

- Apparently the lesbian that's replacing the Maxxie character in the US Skins is going to have much more to do than Maxxie ever did? I'm pretty sure that, what with this and the lesbian/bi character in Gen 3, BE and JB are cynically cashing in on Naomi and Emily's popularity and are now just throwing lesbians at everything because they know there's an automatic fanbase there. AND IT'S TOTALLY WORKING. Hands up who's more inclined to watch something with lesbians in? (I know I am. I watch Pretty Little Liars, for fuck's sake.)
botherd: (ellen: wings)
I just got back from seeing Inception, and omg, it was awesome! Definitely recommended. I don't go to the cinema as often as I like but I'm really glad I did for this, because it was brilliant. Okay, there were some parts that were either a bit confusing or plot holes, but it didn't really matter. Plus, you know, I love Ellen Page (even if she does seem to play Ellen Page in every role) and I was glad she had lots to do.

Um, what else! I've been a bit quiet lately, mostly because nothing interesting is happening in my life. Work is okay, apart from the parts where I feel like my entire job description has changed and I'm going to end up doing stuff I didn't sign up for. Also, I'm super jealous of my brother - he just started a new job a couple of weeks ago, and now his control freak bosses are going on holiday for four weeks and closing the office, so he gets to work from home for a month! And his job basically just involves being paid to go on Facebook all day! IDEK.

Oh, and I just finished reading The Hunger Games, which I devoured (lol pun) in about three days. That's quick for me, seeing as I don't read books as much as I feel I ought to; I usually end up getting distracted by the stupid internet instead. I finished it last night and am going to rush out and buy the sequel tomorrow, which should tell you how much I enjoyed it.

This post is pretty much just turning into 'Here's what I've been enjoying in pop culture lately', isn't it? The other main thing I've been obsessing over is Fringe. I started watching it when the first season aired, but I gave up after a few episodes; I'm not sure what made me pick it up again, but it turns out I stopped watching right before it got awesome. Anyway, should any of you wish to know what to get me for my birthday next month, I'd like Olivia Dunham, please. Unf, she is so hot, and SO GAY. Like, on a scale of one to Prentiss, she's off the charts. I spent the other night rewatching the parts of Mistresses that involve Anna Torv being gay and have come to the conclusion that she basically needs to spend her entire life kissing girls purely for my entertainment. Because, you know, everything revolves around me.

How are you, flist? What books/TV shows/films have you been enjoying lately?
botherd: (gaga: bigger than jesus)
- This is my favourite bullshit rumour ever. SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN. I can't conceive of anything greater than Lady Gaga as a Doctor Who villain. Fuck, I'd settle for fic.

- Speaking of Who: this week's was awesome. I totally cried at the end. So sad that there are only three episodes left this series! Is there any word as to whether Karen Gillan is sticking around for the next series? She'd better be, but Martha and Donna only got one series each...

- I haven't watched the latest episode of Glee yet, on account of everyone saying it's the worst thing ever. Is there anything at all that makes it worth watching? Usually Glee is made of so much fail that unless there are some awesome musical numbers or Brittany and Santana being adorable and gay, I can't be dealing with it.

- Am writing something weird. Actually writing it, in a way I feel good about, instead of just coming up with ideas or scratching out a few awkward sentences, which has been the extent of my "writing" lately. I thought it was going to be something short, but it might turn into something longer. Possibly it'll turn into nothing! We'll see.

- Is it bad that I'm currently kind of more excited about the US Skins than the British Skins movie? I feel like the US Skins is a blank slate - NOW WITH ADDED LESBIANS - whereas the Skins movie has so much horrible baggage attached (read: series four) that it has to work extra hard to make me like it. And, what with gen 1 characters being involved, I bet the film is going to suffer from the exact same 'so many characters, so little time' problem that series four did. SORRY.

- Ugh, Monday tomorrow. Work. Last week I found out that I fucked up something kind of big but not irreversible, so now I have a ton of extra work to do. Also, my super-religious ex-monk colleague needs to stop talking to me about religion. I don't honestly care if he believes that the shootings in Cumbria were "the devil reminding us that he's there" but talking about religion with someone who has wildly opposing views to you = GUARANTEED AWKWARD. Ugh.

Just watched the latest episode of Glee. I'm so ambivalent about this show, because it can be hilarious and I love (most of) the musical numbers, but it can also be full of SO MUCH FAIL. This episode though, I mostly liked. Brief thoughts:

- Oh my God, has any episode of anything ever been quite so anvilicious about its theme? It's not like I expect subtlety from this show, but JESUS.
- Brittany and Santana are starting to send me into full-on squee mode. I'm not interested in fic, but God, I ship it. They're adorable.
- This episode also kind of made me ship Mercedes/Quinn? Did not see that coming.
- I love Cheno so freaking much. I haven't downloaded a single Glee song yet but I need 'One Less Bell to Answer/A House is Not a Home' in my life.

And those were my thoughts on Glee.

Whenever I don't post on LJ for a while - and this is probably the longest I've ever gone; nearly two weeks! - I feel like I need to apologise/explain, but I don't know if people even notice this kind of thing? I've still been around, reading every day and commenting here and there, but I guess because I've been in a bit of a fannish slump I haven't felt the need to post. THANKS FOR BREAKING MY SPIRIT, SKINS. Anyway, these are some of the things I might have posted about over the past two weeks if I weren't so lazy:

- Work sent me on TWO conferences last week. One was in Manchester, and was totally boring and mostly irrelevant to my work and basically a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME, but the second one in Nottingham wasn't so bad. Although we might have spent, uh, forty minutes driving round the centre of Nottingham looking for the damn Hilton. Fuck you, one-way roads and teeny tiny road signs and GPS that kept cutting out! But I actually learnt something at that one, so yay for that, and then afterwards I got to meet up with my half-sister and niece and go to a super pretty café for cupcakes and bumbleberry juice. IDEK is bumbleberry is an actual thing or something they made up, but it was yummy.

- How good is this series of Doctor Who? Matt Smith is delightful as the Doctor and I'm already completely in love with Amy. It's basically my favourite thing ever when the companions get to save the day. ♥

- I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon, and... I'm not entirely sure why? I don't write gen! I've been finding it difficult to write anything lately! IDK, maybe it will inspire me to write this silly crossover idea I've got.

- On Tuesday I went down to London to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] lazy_daze and Zel and see Rufus Wainwright, and OMG, he was fantastic. It was just him and a piano, playing the new album interrupted for the first set and a bunch of older songs for the second set, and he sounded incredible. He messed up on the piano quite a bit, but it was kind of endearing, and he played so many songs I love. I can't believe I'd never seen him play Poses before! ♥

- Unfortunately, the day after I woke up feeling slightly weird, like I had the beginnings of a hangover even though I hadn't been drinking, and on the way home I just got worse and worse. Rushing to the train toilets in order to throw up and only just making it = not big on dignity. :(

- The leader debate last night was all kinds of boring, wasn't it? Still, well done, Mr Clegg; shame you can't win. I feel like I ought to be excited about this election because it's my first ever general election, but mostly I'm just super depressed that the Tories are almost definitely going to win.

- I'm going on holiday tomorrow! We're going down to Cornwall, so I feel kind of smug that our holiday plans haven't been thwarted by the giant volcanic ash cloud of DOOM.
