- This is my favourite bullshit rumour ever. SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN. I can't conceive of anything greater than Lady Gaga as a Doctor Who villain. Fuck, I'd settle for fic.
- Speaking of Who: this week's was awesome. I totally cried at the end. So sad that there are only three episodes left this series! Is there any word as to whether Karen Gillan is sticking around for the next series? She'd better be, but Martha and Donna only got one series each...
- I haven't watched the latest episode of Glee yet, on account of everyone saying it's the worst thing ever. Is there anything at all that makes it worth watching? Usually Glee is made of so much fail that unless there are some awesome musical numbers or Brittany and Santana being adorable and gay, I can't be dealing with it.
- Am writing something weird. Actually writing it, in a way I feel good about, instead of just coming up with ideas or scratching out a few awkward sentences, which has been the extent of my "writing" lately. I thought it was going to be something short, but it might turn into something longer. Possibly it'll turn into nothing! We'll see.
- Is it bad that I'm currently kind of more excited about the US Skins than the British Skins movie? I feel like the US Skins is a blank slate - NOW WITH ADDED LESBIANS - whereas the Skins movie has so much horrible baggage attached (read: series four) that it has to work extra hard to make me like it. And, what with gen 1 characters being involved, I bet the film is going to suffer from the exact same 'so many characters, so little time' problem that series four did. SORRY.
- Ugh, Monday tomorrow. Work. Last week I found out that I fucked up something kind of big but not irreversible, so now I have a ton of extra work to do. Also, my super-religious ex-monk colleague needs to stop talking to me about religion. I don't honestly care if he believes that the shootings in Cumbria were "the devil reminding us that he's there" but talking about religion with someone who has wildly opposing views to you = GUARANTEED AWKWARD. Ugh.

Oh my god, I am SO happy to hear that you are excited for US!Skins! I was sort of 'ehhh' about the whole thing, but now that they're changing up the characters (YAY LESBIANS) and thus changing the storyline (YAY NO CARBON COPIES), I'm terribly excited for it. I'm kind of 'meh' on the movie though, for the exact reasons you stated.

I'm pretty much just treating the US Skins as a completely separate entity from UK Skins, so there's no reason to hate it on principle. The first episode will probably be weird just like the first episode of the US Office was weird, but I'm perfectly willing to give it a chance. PLUS, LESBIANS. \o/

I won't lie -- having lesbians totally sealed the deal for me, re: US!Skins.
no subject
LOL, same. I'm 100% more likely to watch a show if there's potential for girlkissing.

I wouldn't say I'm excited about US Skins but I'm more optimistic than I was at first. I still think capturing the edgy vibe of the show will be tough to do on MTV.

That's true, but I don't think that necessarily means it's going to be bad. The US version of The Office doesn't really capture the tone of the UK version at all, but it's still good in its own right (or was; it kind of sucks now). So I'm hoping something similar will happen with Skins.

Really? IDK My favorite thing about Skins is, when it's not being totally ridiculous, that it does sort of try to mirror real teenaged life (as opposed to the shows you mention, which are really just glossy soaps). I think it could do that without the content you mentioned. I mean, if it could be like a My So-Called Life sort of show, I'd be down with that.

Obviously when you over-exaggerate those things, as Skins is prone to do, it becomes ridiculous, but those moments that aren't exaggerated are the ones that really speak to what it is to be a teenager in the late '00s. Kids swear A LOT, kids sit around and smoke weed and get drunk, kids have lots of bumbling, stupid sex before they're ready and with people they probably shouldn't be having sex with and it's just everyday life for them. I don't think American tv can accurately portray the debauchery of the average teen's life with the kind of normalcy is deserves. It either gets glamorized, a la Gossip Girl, or after school special-ized, a la Glee, neither of which is realistic.
LOL. Basically I just hate teenagers on US tv shows.

For years I've thought about how awesome a teenage show on HBO would be, to the point where I was thinking of developing one myself, after which I'd try to find an agent, etc. Anyway, this is obvs an unrealistic goal for me, but I think someone out there, at some point, should do it. It might be awesome!

Pretty sure these are mythical creatures :) You're right, though, it can be done, it just isn't. (Though I do believe there are some censorship laws regarding drugs on tv that make weed a no-no?)
A teenage show on HBO or Showtime is something I've always wanted and would be AMAZING. Write a pilot, Jen!

Meanwhile, here's my general feeling about Who, having just watched this series' episodes: lots of heart, monsters are ridiculous/easily dispatched. Is that how it's always been?

Pretty much, yeah. Occasionally the monsters are creepy, like the Weeping Angels before this series kind of ruined them, but mostly it's all about the people.

Also, lollll, stray q. I wondered whether it was worth editing my comment. ;)

If you make a typo and don't edit it out, I will PROBABLY pick up on it. Because, you know, that's not annoying or anything. ;)

And I'm actually quite looking forward to Skins!US, but I can't see how it will be that similar to our Skins - there's no way they'll be able to be anything like as dirty lol. Although added lesbians do help. With the movie I'm still excited to see the cast back together and with all the interviews we'll get. They were awesome.

If Karen Gillan doesn't get another series I'm going to be seriously annoyed. And then excited for the next companion. But mostly annoyed!
I think as long as you go into US!Skins with the expectation that it's going to be NOTHING like UK!Skins, it has the potential to be good. We'll see!

I missed the last who. My laptop is in laptop heaven and my uni internet allowance isn't big enough to download the newest ep. Last episode I watched solidified my Rory love. He was a bit pathetic but he was brave and smart and WHY COULDN'T AMY GOTTEN SHOT INSTEAD? I know in terms of the narrative it would be all wrong, but whatever. At present my Amy apathy is becoming my Amy dislike. I don't know if it's the script or Karen Gillan. And like, as you can probs guess I LOVE red heads (unf) but she's not doing it for me either. Sad sad.
I could hug Matt Smith forever though. He's awesome and my favorite thing about the show.
I've always hated Glee. Sorry, universe.
We'll see about the movie. I'm currently really pumped for it. Mostly because I have an inkling the ramifications of season four won't be dwelled on (except for Cook and Effy and Tony). Like, obviously it will be there, but it won't ALL be about Freddie's death. If they're smart they'll set it a couple of years in the future with Cook just out of prison so this inane Cook the felon wank shite can be put to rest. I know, I know, season four was terrible. However, according to JT, it'll mostly be gen 2 with gen 1 making appearances (probably at party scenes) with gen 3 MAYBE being in one scene. When the cast list is released I'll either be disappointed for excited. Mostly because I could definitely see them bringing in the Fitch family and perhaps even Gina, particularly if they set the movie around some kind of family event in Bristol. Plus, I mean, I love Tony and Effy almost as much as Emily and Katie, so I really hope Nick is on board. I also just love most of these characters so much and am excited about seeing them against and hopefully most of them will get proper closure this time. Yeah, I'm probably setting myself up for a fall, and god knows I won't be watching gen 3, but if there's someone I trust, it's Jack mutherflipping Thorne. And frankly this show works best as an ensemble so the movie format will probably fit it well. PLUS I still ship Naomily. The love won't die. I can't help it.
I'm still meh on the US skins. Unlike gen 3 I'll give it a watch though. I'm glad it won't be a carbon copy but I'm still dubious. It'll be interesting to see if they can capture the authenticity UK skins at its best had.
I hope the lesbian cheerleader gets to make out with another girl. WHILE wearing her cheerleading outfit/pervy.
Oh, and J? POST MORE OFTEN. I'm in the middle of exams but I still find time for lj and I'm so chuffed when you post. I'm just used to it, you know? Plus we better be doing another Ashes party because the last one was hilarious/awesome <3

I believe the preferred term is "little monster". :P I actually resisted Gaga for a long time as well, and then I made an effort to actually listen to some of her music and realised that it was fabulous, and then I found out more about her, and now she is basically my ~idol. LOVE HER.
LOL, your Amy dislike is making me like her more, just to be contrary. There's still a teensy part of me though that wishes that a) Karen Gillan would learn a facial expression other than 'wide-eyed', and b) Amy would be given more opportunities to be awesome.
I feel like disliking Glee is the morally righteous position, tbh. There are lots of things that I hate about it but I'm a sucker for musicals and gay cheerleaders. And, also, I quite fancy Lea Michele.
I hope that there won't be too much focus on the events of series four in the movie, but IDK. I just really don't want to get my hopes up at all, you know? I was so optimistic about series four and it sucked SO HARD that I don't really feel like giving them the benefit of the doubt again.
LOL sorry, I've been getting really lazy about posting lately. IDK why, I think it's a post-fandom slump. The Ashes are in Australia this year, right? I'm not sure if timezones will make an Ashes party possible but as long as I'm not asleep while they're playing, we can have one. :D

God, Amy. I WANT to like her. I did in the earlier episodes, when she was a bit sharp and still so obvious damaged. My biggest issue is her static character development. There's not a lot of difference between Amy at the beginning of the season to now. She's still bull headed and makes decisions solely on instinct. I'm not sure if it's because her characterisation varies from week to week or because Gillan, sadly, just isn't cutting it. We'll see. I wish Amy was a bit more like the girl in Blink, that older Who you told me to download. Resourceful, witty AND brave. Amy's brave, but she's also reckless which means she's always getting saved, which is annoying. Plus, MEAN TO RORY. Bitch ;)
LOL, your Amy dislike is making me like her more, just to be contrary
Oh, whatever, Naomi Campbell ;)
I tried to like Glee as well. It was never going to work for me since I generally do not like Musicals. Blah. My flatmate loves it and flails every time it's on, which was amusing since this week the Gaga episode is airing in Aus and he is beyond excited.
Lea Michele is completely hot. I love her smile, it’s completely adorable. My last two gfs were Jewish, and like, it was just a coincidence, but I think it's safe to say I think Jewish girls are generally super pretty.
just really don't want to get my hopes up at all, you know? I was so optimistic about series four and it sucked SO HARD that I don't really feel like giving them the benefit of the doubt again
That's completely legitimate. I wish this flicker of optimism I feel every time I even think about the movie would just fuck off to Africa or something. My ultimate problem with season four, above all, was execution, and the people involved in the movie not only are the minds behind classic Skins but also had little to do with season four. I dunno. I wish my attitude mirrored yours.
(I can't help but wish we'll see Katie, Emily, Naomi, Effy, Cassie and Tony again. They're all such great characters. I don't know *sigh*)
What fandom is the fic about? Is it who? Please be Who! ;) Or a Gaga/Katie story....
The Ashes are in Australia this year, right? I'm not sure if timezones will make an Ashes party possible but as long as I'm not asleep while they're playing, we can have one
WUSS. Think of all the awesome you'll be missing. The bouncy pitches. The sunshine. The beer guts of the Australian male. Plus, you'll get to witness me vacillate between supporting England or Australia (I'm not sure who root for now you guys have won the last 2/3 series!)

LOLLL GAGA/KATIE. AMAZING. Well, now I want to write that. ;) It's not Who - I did actually try to write Who!fic, but I didn't have any story beyond "LOL Katie meets the Doctor" so it ground to a halt - it's Legend of the Seeker. IDK if you watch that but if not, you should!
I don't think Amy was ever mean to Rory. Or, well, kind of, but in a totally affectionate way. I think the most character development Amy has had has been with regards to her feelings for Rory and her realisation that she does actually love him.
Re. the cricket - I don't have the freaking TV channel that airs the Ashes over here so there's no way I'm staying up all night just to listen to the cricket on the radio. SORRY. ;)

I have absolute faith in Jack Thorne with writing the Skins movie. That guy has never let me down so far!

Jack Thorne is probably about the best choice of writer for the Skins movie but I'm still not getting my hopes up. Series four burned me too badly.
