Long post is long, sorry.

Whenever I don't post on LJ for a while - and this is probably the longest I've ever gone; nearly two weeks! - I feel like I need to apologise/explain, but I don't know if people even notice this kind of thing? I've still been around, reading every day and commenting here and there, but I guess because I've been in a bit of a fannish slump I haven't felt the need to post. THANKS FOR BREAKING MY SPIRIT, SKINS. Anyway, these are some of the things I might have posted about over the past two weeks if I weren't so lazy:

- Work sent me on TWO conferences last week. One was in Manchester, and was totally boring and mostly irrelevant to my work and basically a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME, but the second one in Nottingham wasn't so bad. Although we might have spent, uh, forty minutes driving round the centre of Nottingham looking for the damn Hilton. Fuck you, one-way roads and teeny tiny road signs and GPS that kept cutting out! But I actually learnt something at that one, so yay for that, and then afterwards I got to meet up with my half-sister and niece and go to a super pretty café for cupcakes and bumbleberry juice. IDEK is bumbleberry is an actual thing or something they made up, but it was yummy.

- How good is this series of Doctor Who? Matt Smith is delightful as the Doctor and I'm already completely in love with Amy. It's basically my favourite thing ever when the companions get to save the day. ♥

- I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon, and... I'm not entirely sure why? I don't write gen! I've been finding it difficult to write anything lately! IDK, maybe it will inspire me to write this silly crossover idea I've got.

- On Tuesday I went down to London to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] lazy_daze and Zel and see Rufus Wainwright, and OMG, he was fantastic. It was just him and a piano, playing the new album interrupted for the first set and a bunch of older songs for the second set, and he sounded incredible. He messed up on the piano quite a bit, but it was kind of endearing, and he played so many songs I love. I can't believe I'd never seen him play Poses before! ♥

- Unfortunately, the day after I woke up feeling slightly weird, like I had the beginnings of a hangover even though I hadn't been drinking, and on the way home I just got worse and worse. Rushing to the train toilets in order to throw up and only just making it = not big on dignity. :(

- The leader debate last night was all kinds of boring, wasn't it? Still, well done, Mr Clegg; shame you can't win. I feel like I ought to be excited about this election because it's my first ever general election, but mostly I'm just super depressed that the Tories are almost definitely going to win.

- I'm going on holiday tomorrow! We're going down to Cornwall, so I feel kind of smug that our holiday plans haven't been thwarted by the giant volcanic ash cloud of DOOM.

I notice when you’re gone!

:)

Anyway, I too have been watching Doctor Who, which is a new thing for me, and I’m really, really enjoying it, and it’s all because of Matt Smith and… the girl who plays Amy. God, I should remember her name, she has really pretty hair. Anyway, yes, for once I don’t have to skip the Doctor Who posts on my flist because I kind of know what people are talking about?

Can you actually see the giant cloud of DOOM, btw? It's really impressive in pictures...

Karen Gillan plays Amy! I agree, she has ridiculously pretty hair. And, dude, I'm glad you're enjoying Doctor Who! DALEKS TOMORROW. \o/

The cloud of DOOM isn't actually visible at all, although I heard news reports that maybe some ash would fall in Scotland? IDK if it actually did.

Jamie Brittain has so much to answer for.

Most of my flist post a LOT less than they used to, for one reason and another. It's SO quiet these days!

Nottingham city centre's one way system is EVIL. Almost as bad as Bath's.

I read a review on Rufus in the Metro. I still haven't seen him and really feel I should, but I've not been keeping tabs on music stuff well enough to buy CDS when they come out, let alone go to gigs. I keep wondering where the old Hannah's gone off to!

Tories probably will win, but it'll be interesting to see where the Lib Dems get to. I'm just excited by the statistics of it all, which is lame, even checking where I have greater 'voting power'.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a lot of the old crowd are quieter these days, so that plus a quieter fandom means there's not a lot happening on my flist outside of communities. I guess it's just one of those things, but it makes me sad.

I hope the Lib Dems make some significant gains, and certainly the debates will increase their exposure a lot, but I'm not expecting miracles. And I'd love to have some 'voting power', but sadly I live in a Tory stronghold now. :(

I'm just super depressed that the Tories are almost definitely going to win.. Same.
What is weird is that Milliband is at my grandparents house tonight because apparently he had an hour to kill in a fancy house in Sheffield but I've come back to Manchester today for Uni. I mean I'd still vote Labour and probably always will but that's still strange.
Tragic that we will probably be under Tory rule for up to 4/5 years! Creepy David Cameron.

In lighter news.. yeah Dr Who is amazing this season. Eccleston was my first, Tennant was MINE but I think Smith might be the fave... strange.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-16 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't bear the thought of David Cameron being our Prime Minister. :( Ugh, how awful.

It's early days but I think Matt Smith might just become my favourite Doctor too. He's quite Tennant-like at the moment, just a bit toned down, but it'll be interesting to see him come into his own.

THANKS FOR BREAKING MY SPIRIT, SKINS

Yeah, this...pretty much sums it up. I'm a glutton for punishment though, and still harbour hopes that the movie will a) get off the ground b) all my favorites will be in it and c) won't choke on great volcanic plumes of awful. Oh, Skins. I wish I knew how to quit you!

What do you actually do? Workwise I mean. You don't have to be all specific, but maybe a general outline? Otherwise I'm gonna keep thinking you're getting paid to like, write up on Star Trek conventions (and if you actually are, I SAY AWESOME).

Speaking of random things to write...whatever happened to the 80's AU? Huh? ;)

I only saw clips of the leadership debate. Labour seems bereft of ideas. They're whipping out the FEAR card pretty readily. Now, I'm from one of your colonies, so excuse my ignorance, but why is Cameron so despised? While my political tendencies run heavily towards the LibDem platform, as far as conservatives go, the Tories are alright. They're not going to completely eviscerate the public service plus Cameron is very socially liberal. The conservaties over here made a concerted effort to marginalise a whole range of groups- Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers, working women and the gays (the current conservative leader said he's "scared" of gay men, which while he retracted that statement the next day, is both pathetic and hilarious simultaneously). What I'm saying is, while I wouldn't vote Tory, Cameron seems like a good guy and at least he's dragging some of the conservative's social policies into the 21st century. I will state I disagree on their crime policy, though (lock and up and throw away the key is so 19th century, guys).

With the LibDem surge I can't see the Tories winning at all. They have to win a truckload of seats plus steal some of the existing LibDems ones. It's early days but this seems unlikely. It looks like Brown will clinge to power, which seems a bit off to me, personally. I hope the LibDems do some serious politcal reform, particularly regarding the electoral details and introducing proportional representation....

and I think I just nerded out all over your journal. Sorry, J.

Just quickly- do you download Doctor Who? And if so, where?

Oh man, I don't even have the mental energy to think about the Skins movie. I'll watch it, obviously, but right now I have more hope that the American version of Skins will turn out well, and that says it all.

Eep, The Fic That Must Not Be Named! I'm in this place where I think it's the worst, most embarrassingly awful thing ever, and I'm not sure how to get out of it. Not to mention that series four royally fucked up my Effy characterisation.

You're going to be so disappointed when I tell you about my job! I love it, but it's really not the sort of thing that anyone else would be that impressed by. Uh, I work for a disability organisation - not the sort that provides services for disabled people, but we campaign for disabled people's rights (so my boss is frequently down in London talking to MPs and stuff like that). My actual work isn't exactly thrill-a-minute but I love it because a) I work with an awesome bunch of people, and b) I'm learning a huge amount about an area of equality that I basically knew NOTHING about before. And, not to sound all cheesy, but it's making me a better person.

When it comes to Cameron - you're right, as conservatives go he's not that bad, and I'm hugely grateful that I live in a country where getting a conservative government wouldn't mean that some of my basic rights are under threat. But while I'm sure he wouldn't repeal any of Labour's gay rights legislation, I don't for a minute believe he would have pursued any of it himself, and Wikipedia has just informed me that he was initially against scrapping Section 28. So that makes me dislike him even more. The thing is, while our conservatives aren't as bad as some country's conservatives, they're still a lot worse than our other parties (other than, you know, UKIP and the BNP). They still care about rich white men more than anyone else.

Honestly, I have no clue what's going to happen with the election. I'm starting to think that a hung parliament is the most likely outcome, but who knows.

Doctor Who is one of the few shows that I actually watch on a proper telly as it airs! I know of an LJ community that has downloads, but it's one of those places that only accepts fairly active LJers as members and I'm not sure you'd qualify. :/ You could try torrents?
