I miss the fourth wall. :(

Oh God, Kat's read Lily/Kat RPF? Ugh, excuse me while I CURL UP INTO A BALL AND DIE. Obviously I think fanfiction is awesome, including RPF, but nothing makes me cringe more than when actors or creators acknowledge its existence. :(

(Also, why did the person who asked the question have to direct her to the Pit, of all places? Guaranteed scarring for life.)

I cringed when I read that topic. There are certain subjects that should just not be brought up in the presence of actors etc. and fanfic is one of them.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seriously. No good can ever come of it!

[identity profile] danninixon.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
i noticed that too its cool that shes cool with it

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm glad she was polite about it but she said she thinks it's weird. It just makes me cringe.

[identity profile] old-wp.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd think it was weird if it was about me, too. But it's about people outside of fandom not understanding fandom. The divide should never be crossed! It's wrong! LOLL

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL exactly! There's just no need for them to know. D:

[identity profile] old-wp.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's safe to assume most know, to some vague degree, but to go out of your way and ask about it is ridiculous. Like, please to be ignoring the man behind the curtain.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I never know what people hope to achieve by asking them about it. Validation, I guess, but I don't know why anyone would expect to get it. Obviously they're going to think it's weird!

[identity profile] summerstorm.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think with all the utter destroying of the fourth wall in American Idol fandom I'm way past cringing over this sort of thing, but seriously, there is just no point in asking them about it. It only creates unnecessary awkwardness, and most of the time—when, as it almost always happens, the people asking about it are seriously lacking in self-awareness—it makes the entire fandom look really, really bad.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
With the really big RPF fandoms the breaking of the fourth wall doesn't bother me as much, but because Skins is such a small fandom and the actors seem normal and not that famous (as opposed to being "celebrities") that it seems extra weird. But, yeah, it always just makes fandom look bad. :/

[identity profile] nomey123.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god when i saw the subject i just cringed so bad, she answered it pretty well i think but what the hell was whoever asked her thinking?! It's just awkward for everyone...

In general though the site does seem legit and Kat has been pretty cool with her answers to questions, she's answered some of the slightly more personal ones well and i'm relieved that the new hair wasn't entirely intentional and she's trying to get it lighter.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she's seemed pretty cool. Honestly, her forums aren't as bad as I thought they'd be (I was expecting carnage) and if people stuck to just asking about, like, her ferret, it'd be fine.

[identity profile] wotchdisspace.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
She doesn't seem to mind. Hmmm. *iz waiting for a Kat icon with the words; "Kat sees you thar writing fanfiction... She approves"* Or something. Lolll

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think she was just being polite. I mean, she said she thought it was weird. :/

[identity profile] fivewhatfive.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she does mind. It didn't feel like a LOL AWESOME response, which people are almost never going to find so WHY CAN'T THEY SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT?

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! No famous person is ever going to go "OH YOUR PORN ABOUT ME IS SO EXCELLENT, PLEASE MARRY ME".

[identity profile] fivewhatfive.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLLLLLLL. "THAT IS EXACTLY THE RIGHT BRAND OF LUBE, IMPRESSIVE!"

Seriously, remember when people had boundaries? Fans, paparazzi, magazines...? Good times.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I... actually don't. :(

[identity profile] fivewhatfive.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL MAYBE IT WAS WISHFUL THINKING, THEN. But I don't know, it feels like it was different... ten years ago when I was shipping Britney/Christina *cough*

[identity profile] queengreen.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still torn between laughing my ass off completely and wanting to cower in a corner and cry. The whole fandom/real life line was bound to have to be redefined in our new media age, but this still feels too weird to be real.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I mainly just want to cry. (And I also want to know which fic she read! I hope it was at least something decent.)

[identity profile] nomey123.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
haha yeah my first thought after the cringing was what and where did she read it! because god knows what else she might have seen depending on where she was looking...

Thinking to the skins novel vid though then i can see how it could be funny but this is a lot worse because it was actually about her which makes me just cringe so bad and seriously hope it was semi-decent!

[identity profile] sgtmian.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, i cringed when i read that too, but more because i find rpf uncomfortable to read, and they're not even about me. i hope she stopped reading before she got to the sex. D:

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God, I REALLY hope she didn't read porn about herself. D:

[identity profile] boppingalone.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Jesus.

[identity profile] fab-fairy.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
*cringes with you*

[identity profile] liev.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that it was inappropriate. But it seems that this fanfic question ALWAYS comes up at some point, no matter the fandom. And I'm always like 'Why would peple want to know? Why do they ask that?', but at least she stayed classy and responded fairly well (I'm still slightly surprised at how intelligent she comes off in all these responses/blog posts, I dunno why). I'm also kinda amused that she read RPF out of all the fanfics that are floating out there, and Naomi/Emily ones are certainly far easier to find as well.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-01-04 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good lord, when will people learn? This happened so many times in the Supernatural fandom - there's always someone determined to ask Jared and Jensen about the fanfic, and considering the alarming nature of a lot of it, they've been pretty cool about it (though I remember Jensen getting a bit tetchy when someone pushed their luck and asked like a third consecutive question when he'd clearly said all he wanted to say on the topic), but it really would be better for all concerned if it just remained the elephant in the room it was always supposed to be, surely?

Edited to remove hilarious and entirely inappropriate typo. Oops.
