Obligatory Thursday Skins Post

NAOMI ♥

Hopefully now people will stop calling her a callous, unfeeling bitch.

I didn't dislike the episode as much as I thought I would! Mostly because my main issue with Cook is that I don't think his shitty upbringing justifies or excuses his shitty behaviour, and this episode actually dealt with that. I'm surprised they're actually sending him to prison, though! I mean, what's going to happen to him in the rest of the series?

Things I didn't like: a lot of the dialogue was shit. And, I'm sorry, but I find it completely implausible that Cook comes from such a well-off background. He seems so obviously working class!

But, whatever. Most importantly, NEXT WEEK OMG. "I'm Katie fucking Fitch, who the fuck are you?" ♥ ♥ ♥ Although, Katie/Thomas?! WHAT. I don't know I feel about that, I'm still reeling.

Omg, Naomi was so fucking amazing this week. No lie. And yeah, totally enjoyed this episode SO much more than I thought I would. *slow clap*

Katie looks AWESOME next episode. It needs to be Thursday tomorrow.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, when Naomi was sitting and watching Emily sleep I DIED. ♥ ♥ She was easily the best part of the episode.

I'm so excited about next week I can't even function. KATIE FUCKING FITCH.

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm Katie fucking Fitch, who the fuck are you?"!! Dies!
She is the best EVARRRRR!
And also, I loved Cook's Epispde and I love him even more now. Hot + fucked up + redemption = YES, please!

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Katie is AMAZING.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how well done Cook's redemption was, considering when they wanted to redeem Tony they gave him brain damage.

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. Cook comes across as so complex, but he's not really. The fact that he took the wrap for Naomi and to keep himself away from the junior lad is completely adorable. He needs sorting out but I hope it's in a careful way.
I now love Cook, oh dear.
This episode also made me feel better about 4x02! anyone else??

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I was alreeady feeling okay about 4x02, but I hope people will stop saying that Naomi's cold and unfeeling now that she's shown how guilty she feels.

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I think this episode manages to show how fucked up (or not) Naomi was about messing with Emily. I hope people have more sympathy for her now because she's such an honest character.

I LOVE THIS SHOW.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
ME TOO. LOLL, how did a freaking COOK episode manage to renew my love for this show? Crazy.

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
IKR??
Jack is a great actor though, and even though some of this episode was RIDIC! He managed to pull together the bits that mean something.
IDK but I really felt for Cook in that episode, more that I did for him at the end of series 3. I still remail unfased by Freddie. *yawn*.

P.S. Is it ok if I friend you to keep up with your Skins opinion and your amazing fics?

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
LOL you've already friended me, dude. :D

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. Oh dear. That's the gin talking, or the whiskey, or the run.
Anyway, my bad! I guess I had a lot of relies to that comment.
Me= idiottttt forever :) I apologize. Thanks, anyway,
P.S. Katie Fitch is only a week away! Thanks, Skins, for turning us all into dogs waiting with our tongues wagging.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, don't worry about it. No need to apologise!

[identity profile] myfirstkitchen.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Lily still can't act for shit. Very pretty, though. Mind you Meg can't either, Kat totally got the acting mutation.

I think Cook's mam is supposed to be a Tracey Emin type (already done in Beautiful People!), so the money was late and new.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there are times when she's really good and times when she's... not. A lot of it has to do with the material she's given; she was a lot better in her episode last year, which was a lot better written. (Some of the dialogue tonight was painfully expositiony.) I think Luke's the worst actor in the cast though.

You might be right about Cook's mum; that would explain it better.

[identity profile] myfirstkitchen.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Luke's dreadful, but then nobody even tries to give him material that requires him to do anything other than pout a bit and look moody even in the non-Skins work he's done. I'm sure he's well aware that he's there for 15 year old townies to fawn over, as in every other job he's done, just as Effy's there to look enigmatic, screwed up and dangerously beautiful for the adult males watching. Jack, Meg and Ollie are the only ones who have any real talent and can wring emotion out of clunk. Merve's not bad. Lisa's lovely but essentially plays a heightened version of herself. I don't think many of them will work again outside the Casualty/Bill/Holby etc arena.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Last year I would have said that Lily was one of the best actors, certainly over Kat (assuming you meant Kat instead of Meg; I love Meg to pieces, but she's not very good) but this year she's been very uneven so far. I don't know what's happened. I think Ollie is good sometimes but other times quite painful. Jack is good but I'm not convinced he could play a character that was very different to himself.

Out of all of them I think Kaya is most likely to be the breakout success; she's been saddled with a terrible love interest this generation, but she has a lot of screen presence and chemistry with nearly everyone (Luke being the notable, and unfortunate, exception). And unlike Jack, she's playing a character completely different to herself. I can't really see any of them blowing up like Dev Patel, but then I wouldn't have predicted that Dev would become a massive success, so who knows?

[identity profile] myfirstkitchen.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant Kat, yes, as before. I don't think Ollie has grown into himself yet, but there's a lot of nouse there. Kaya and Jack I think will at least have careers beyond being yoots, there's plenty of Jack-type roles out there and he's already in with Shane Meadows, but the others not so much. Kaya you can't take your eyes off, she has that dangerously powerful charisma thing that few actors of either gender have where she could do silent films and still be compelling.

[identity profile] torak303.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Just jumping into this without warning (OH HAI!), I spotted Jack in a version of Wuthering Heights. He had a tiny bit part, had to deliver a note, but it was nice to see him jumping out of Skins zone to play a peasant boy :P

Also, agree with the idea of Cook's mum being new money. And the way she's going, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it doesn't last.

[identity profile] cheapantique.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you high? Lily can't act?! In what world, Mars?

She can definatly act, but I agree that its more about the material she's given so it can be hit and miss, just like with any actor though.

[identity profile] boppingalone.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The first half of the episode I was texting my mate all "OMG, WASTE OF MY LIFE," and then I actually started to enjoy it; colour me surprised and what-have-you.

I think Lily was BRILLIANT in the Cook/Naomi scene. At first I was all, the fuck? She's going to kiss him in front of her own house in which Emily is sleeping? And then I was all AWWWH, CUTEST SKINS FRIENDSHIP EVER. Easily my favourite scene of the episode.

The trailer for Katie's is just in a WHOLE OTHER LEAGUE. Thomas/Katie = !!! WUT. But I don't see it being anything other than a "I'm low of self-esteem and I need someone to tell me I'm beautiful" kind of thing so, not too bothered. HOWEVER, I just KNOW I'm going to be shipping Katie/Effy SO HARD after it. SO. HARD. &hearts:

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought she was really good in that scene too. (Less so in the first scene where Cook comes to see her, but her dialogue was pretty bad.) So relieved the kiss was actually really sweet and didn't bother me at all.

Oh, I so hope the Katie/Thomas hook-up is just that; I don't think I could deal with them being in a ~relationship.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
OMGGGGGGGG RIGHT-CLICK SAVE.

THIS IS WHY KATIE FUCKING FITCH IS THE GREATEST.

[identity profile] old-wp.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOWWWWWWW. GAHHHHHH A WEEEEEEEEEK

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I DON'T KNOW HOW I'LL SURVIVE.

[identity profile] liev.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked that we saw more of Naomi's feelings this episode, though I'd still have loved to see a glimpse of that last week ;) The two NE scenes we got managed to deliver what they were supposed to without needing any lines, which is great, because those two need realistic development to be believable in coming episodes.

And Lily's acting is kinda baffling me this year. In one scene she knocks it out of the park, while in the next it's close to cringe-worthy (for exapmle the football pitch scnee last episode and the first CN scene this episode). I hope she szarts to get more consisten soon, because she's extremely talented and I'd hate to see it being wasted to same extent.

Jack was excellent, I always love how he portrays Cook in the emotional scenes. But I'm looking forward to seeing him in very different roles in the future, because so far I feel like he's mostly played characters that resemble him quite a bit. It was a good/okay episodes overall, though I have to admit I was quite bored during the first 30 minutes. So I certainly don't think it was as amazing as some fans say, but it was very solid and managed to feel mostly true to character, something which last week's didn't always succeed in, albeit it affected me way more and put me through a whirlwind of emotion, which is quite an achievement in itself.

Katie is epic. Enough said.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree re. Lily's inconsistency. It's strange because last year I would have said she was one of the best actors in the cast, but she's very uneven. Jack is probably the strongest actor but I actually can't imagine him in a role that was very different to Cook, and I think he might suffer from being typecast.

The episode as a whole definitely wasn't amazing, but I think I was pleasantly surprised just because I was really expecting to hate it.

[identity profile] holeybubushka.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hopefully now people will stop calling her a callous, unfeeling bitch.

GOD SHE IS SUCH A CALLOUS, UNFEELING BITCH. (Kidding! heh)

I liked this episode in some ways more than last week- at least it was simple and wasn't convoluted. I've stopped trying to piece together all the ludicrous plot points from ep two. The plot was more simple here and it let the episode ~breathe~ more. Cook and Naomi sharing scenes were lovely and I love that COOK is involved in the strongest male/female relationship in the show. I love Effy and think she seems much more like the Effy I know around Cook. I don't ship them but I'm really intrigued how they can work as friends. I even think Luke is at his strongest when opposite Jack.

And yes, I'm glad to see Naomi taking some ownership of her actions. The only way she can learn from this kerfuffle is to grow from it. Now Emily needs to work through her anger, which she will, with the help of vodka shots, it looks like.

I really liked the defence attorney, strongest one off character since Kieran. Jack was really good. Him, Kaya and Kat are the standouts in this gen. Lily, it seems, is only as good as the writing lets her be (ie- sometimes FANTASTIC other times...very average).

OMG OMG OMG, KATIE KATIE KATIE. The twins are FAR AND AWAY the best two characters in the show. GODDDDDD, look how she struts? UNF.

Katie/Thomas might not be bad. I prefer her with Effy or the Twitchy Little Guy but...Thomas is kind of a badass but also fundamentally decent. As long as he doesn't mope around....I might be ok with it. I know. I'm SHOCKED, too. Oh, speaking of the little twitchy guy, did you get my email?

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-13 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the main strength this episode had over the previous one is that they just decided to tell it straight. If they hadn't told the Naomi/Sophia story backwards and made it into a 'mystery' I think it would have worked a lot better and made Naomi's motivation clearer. This episode showed that simple is better.

My main problem with Katie/Thomas right now is that I just don't see why they would like each other. I can't imagine it! Maybe I could see why Katie would like a nice, stable guy like Thomas, but apart from the UNF factor I can't see why Thomas would like Katie. I'm willing to be persuaded, but right now I'm just kind of baffled.

I did get your email! Haven't had time to read the story over again yet but I'll get it back to you as soon as I can.
