Obligatory Thursday Skins Post

Wow, that was the stupidest thing ever written.

Once again, Skins has taken a storyline that would have been interesting on its own - Effy recovering from a suicide attempt - and rendered it completely ridiculous by adding A PSYCHO WHO BRAINWASHED EFFY AND BEAT FREDDIE TO DEATH. I just. What is this? Jesus, I've disliked Freddie throughout and thought he was back on top douche form this episode, but even he deserved better than that. It's not ~edgy, Jamie Brittain, it's just bullshit.

The best part of this episode once again was Katie fucking Fitch - "She dumped you again" - but I can't even squee about that because I'm in mourning. Not for Freddie, but for the show I used to love.

I LIKE YOUR NEW TAG. That is all.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLLL well, it needed renaming!

[identity profile] liev.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's pray together bb. There's no way the finale is going to be anything but shit now, just because it just has to deal with what happened in this episode, and what's happened has been the worst possible thing to ever happen to this show - a totally stupid and unbelievable twist that would work well in every bad horror movie, not a teen drama that used to be good.

I totally get where the Radio Times guy was coming from now.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLL, I was so surprised when everyone was hating on the Radio Times guy - like, had people not been watching the show? Of course the finale's going to be shit.

But seriously, what the fuck was up with this episode?

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, I don't read spoilers. Please don't post them in my LJ.

[identity profile] karatam.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It was in an ad immediately following the show, I didn't think it was really a spoiler, sorry

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, was it in the trailer they showed straight after? I watched that but I didn't think I saw any of what you mentioned - possibly I just wasn't paying attention! Don't worry about it.

LOL Jamie Brittain is such a douche. You know he only did it to get a ~reaction, but he probably wasn't expecting the reaction to be complete derision.

Oh, poor Kaya! LOL but really all those people should be glad, because now they don't have to waste an hour of their life on this bullshit.

And, thanks! New job is going all right, but it's a bit boring so far. I'm hoping it'll pick up soon.

Not for Freddie, but for the show I used to love.

that is so fucking true.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It makes me so sad to think about how good it used to be, and what it's become. I can't believe it's the same show that gave us the brilliance of Naomi's episode last year.

[identity profile] harlequingerhl.livejournal.com 2010-03-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly, it's not the same. basically i have decided this whole series didnt happen. skins ended with effy, cook and freddy on the boat. with almost all of them happy. but now it will end with all of them being depressed -- sorry wasn't skins like, funny once? dead to me.

[identity profile] old-wp.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's not ~edgy, Jamie Brittain, it's just bullshit.

EXACTLY. I don't even. If I hadn't been incredibly disappointed already, this would've done me in. As it were, I'm laughing and crying at the same time.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, at this stage it's just like - LOL, Skins is being terrible again. What's new?

Yeah, I find it completely baffling that MULTIPLE PEOPLE obviously thought this storyline was a good idea. What they hell are they on?

I honestly don't think I've ever seen a show go from awesome to awful so abruptly. Most shows at least have a transition period with a couple of mediocre seasons first.

[identity profile] holeybubushka.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I know, babes.

I feel like this season ended after episode four for me. Everything after that is inane bullshit.

I can't even get excited about Noami/Emily in bed together! How could they construct one of the best coming of age/coming out stories one year and decimate it the next? Wow, Jamie Britton, just...wow. *slow clap*

I hope you're job is going well!

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, most of the series BEFORE episode four was bullshit as well. Katie's episode has been the lone bright spot for me.

Any sort of Naomi/Emily reconciliation would be RIDICULOUS at this stage. I mean, Sophia killed herself in early September, and Emily probably found out about the cheating by October... and now it's AUGUST and they're still in this horrible miserable limbo? How are we meant to believe it can magically get better in one episode? GAH.

Job is going okay, thanks!

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Succinctly put! I can't believe this show was ever thought of as being 'realistic'.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen this episode yet (the way this series has gone, I usually come here to read your reaction first to see exactly how much I need to fear a new episode before actually putting myself through it), but when you said about Freddie being brutally murdered, I kind of assumed you were just exaggerating for comic effect. It was only when I looked elsewhere, I was like "oh, they actually did kill Funsponge."

I guess if nothing else, in a series that has repeatedly failed to give me anything I wanted (more Katie, any Pandora at all, a plotline worthy of Naomi and Emily), they did at least throw me a bone by doing what I wanted them to do throughout series three and making Freddie die painfully. I have a feeling I may feel slightly guilty when I actually see it, though.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not exaggerating, he actually was beaten to death with a baseball bat by Effy's psychotic counsellor who's in love with her. I don't even. And it's not even enjoyable to watch, it's brutal and ridiculous at the same time.

I'm honestly amazed that this year the writers have so little respect for their fans, their characters, and the principles of good storytelling.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-03-12 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I concur. I can't help thinking about when Chris died back in series two, and how well-played and genuinely moving that was, and how I can't imagine this having anything like the same effect.

It does just seem to have gone a bit Shameless, in that they have sacrificed everything else to the altar of -*edginess*-, which is a shame. They had so much potential here, and I think what makes it worse is that there were moments of brilliance in this series - like all the character development Katie got in her episode - so it's not that they can't do it, it's just that they aren't doing it. That's what really riles me. I don't expect them to be on form all the time, but they should be delivering good stuff with the occasional stumble, not a load of crap with the occasional lurch into an engaging storyline.
