Obligatory Thursday Skins Post

I hated it. God, what a waste of space this entire series has been.

Okay, there were two things I liked. Obviously the best part was KATIE SLEEPING ON EFFY'S CHAIR ♥ ♥ ♥ and I also loved Karen's long list of things she likes. But the rest? Meh.

All the Cook and Freddie stuff was such bullshit I can't even summon up the energy to write about it. Just terrible.

The only way they could force Panda and Thomas back together was to make Panda a secret genius and Thomas a secret brilliant athlete so they could both go to Harvard together? Seriously?

They had so much to wrap up this episode but so much time was fucking WASTED by ridiculous bullshit that was obviously supposed to be funny but just wasn't, like Pandora singing and JJ and Cook dancing. Christ, they didn't even give Effy - motherfucking EFFY STONEM, the one character who's been around from the start - anything meaningful to do. What was her last scene? I can't even remember, that's how inconsequential it was.

And then there was Naomi and Emily. I'd heard there was a retcon but not what it was, and I'd heard that people were really happy with the spoilers, but I'm sorry, I hated it. I hated the retcon, because it obviously wasn't planned since last series, so that just cheapens Naomi's episode in series three. I hated that their reconciliation happened in front of everyone. I hated the stupid speech, and I hated Naomi's stupid hair. I can't believe that one speech is supposed to make everything all right, when they've been miserable living together for NEARLY A YEAR. NEARLY A FREAKING YEAR. This whole storyline has been so ill-conceived and horribly executed that it actually makes me angry, because the writers had such a good thing going with the pairing and they pissed it all away.

Thank fuck it's over.

I need a drink.

I was drinking while watching and it still didn't help.

Skins series 4 is now officially erased from my memory.

Same here. Oh well, there'll always be fic.

I'm glad that was your response to the retcon. I was seriously boggling at people who thought it made things okay.

Um, no, it doesn't, because it's so obviously NAOMI'S HEART IS PASTEDE ON YAY that it makes me see red. They fucked up an amazing thing, and I'll never forgive them. (And I haven't even watched the episode! I just know enough now.)

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
How could anyone think it made everything okay? Not only is it a stupid, unsatisfying end to this series, it also retroactively shits on the good stuff that happened before. Gah! It wasn't even a well-written speech, for fuck's sake. The Naomi that would say "I would die for you" is the same Naomi who says "lover" in the books, i.e. NOT MY NAOMI.

On the other hand, the whole thing has been so out of character that it makes it really easy for me to separate it from series three in my mind and pretend it never happened.

Oh, dude, don't feel lame. It's fair enough if you liked the speech, it just really didn't work for me.

There was so much stupid shit in this episode, but I think the ridiculous plot device that takes the cake for me was the illegal immigrant college dropout getting into fucking HARVARD on a track scholarship. Just LOLWUT.

[identity profile] old-wp.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Do people in the UK think getting into Harvard is that easy? "LOL STUPID AMERICANS." ;)

It met every expectation that I had for it, in that I agree with everything you said.

There's a community college here that people call Harvard by the Highway...I'm positive that must be what they meant, because BAHAHAHA. Fuck you, Skins.

Katie's storyline went from something that I loved to her being rejected by Thomas? I don't fucking get it. Blah.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh God, I'd almost forgotten about the whole Katie/Thomas thing. At least they didn't end up together, which is what I'd feared, but her sudden realisation that she liked him was completely pointless. Whatever, at least she's free to go off with Effy now.

[identity profile] karatam.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't even know what to think.

Did anybody care about Thomas' running storyline? Getting into Harvard without passing high school? WTF??

And did they think that some cute scenes of Naomily were going to distract us from the fact that they've been miserable for so long?

And lets not even get started on Cook, Effy and Katie, because then I'll just get pissed off

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Thomas' running storyline was so bizarre and contrived and completely pointless. WHY did the writers think it was a good idea? Why did they think ANY of it was a good idea? I'm honestly baffled.

Remember when we were all excited before it aired? I knew it couldn't live up to my expectations but I never thought it would ever be this bad.

[identity profile] shadowings.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
you know how for nanowrimo you did 2nd year stories? LET'S HAVE THAT BE THE CANON PLZ.

Heh, I thought Second Year Stories had plenty of problems but at least no one got beaten to death with a fucking baseball bat.

Yeah. There was a lot of fuckery here. Overall, enjoyable ep (if with STUPIDLY contrived storylines), but rubbish as a finale, and rushed resolutions where we got any.
I think I need a s3 rewatch STAT or I may start actually disliking these characters.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'd ever start disliking the characters, which is miraculous considering what the show did with them. A series three rewatch is definitely in order though.

LOL, oh, yeah, I know. God, how underwhelming

There is no way I'm watching next season. None.

I dunno- some parts of the Naomi speech I loved- "slve to how i feel about you". The "I would die for you" is pathetic, and even more so when we've barely seen them interact as a couple. The writers CHEAT SO MUCH IT'S RIDICULOUS. In some ways, a Panda/Thomas/Katie could have been an ineresting dynamic but the writers couldn't/didn't want to set it up properly. So, it falls flat. Big surprise.

The Harvard thing is too stupid to even talk about.

We don't know about Effy's future-nor Katie's (what interview is she going for?). We don't even know if Cook is going back to prison (we imagine he will at some point, though).

I have to re watch the E/N scenes to really get a sense of them. Some parts of Naomi's speech I loved...other bits didn't make a lot of sense. I don't think they've been character assaisinating Naomi too much- it's Emily who has next to no development this season. She's been a pill. I know your girlfriend cheated on you, but sitting around and moping and actively trying to cheat makes you look like an asshole. Honestly, neither or them come out looking good.

Just *sigh*. I'm glad it's over. Also, I'm really glad it's only 8 episodes.

Although this whole episode felt like a movie set up

just saying

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Emily has been pretty awful this series. I think it bothers me less because I didn't like her as much in the first place, but it still sucks.

Honestly, the thought of a movie with these characters just makes me feel tired. Haven't they put us through enough already?

[identity profile] trickstertroll.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I had this whole really long thing written up about why I liked this episode, but turns out it was about four posts long. That's just... unnecessary. I did find a lot of things to like about it though and if you're up for a bit of a read I posted it all here: Hiding on my journal (http://trickstertroll.livejournal.com/8373.html#cutid1)

WHERE IS FANDOM LOCATED?? Lol, I've only watched a few eps, but it would be nice to know, and it's suprisingly difficult to find. Is Skins over for good now or will there be a new cast?? Also, I loled at the Thomas thing too, BUT it is possible. MAYBE. I mean, I'm not an illegal immigrant and my scholarship isn't for a sport I just started, but I for real didn't go to high school my last two years and still ended up at a top 50 school...you just have to be creative. In fact I think the thing that's hardest to believe is that he could be an international student that got in a week before, just because of all the security precautions there are for international kids.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
The main fandom comm is [livejournal.com profile] skinsfans, so that's a good place to start! Um, I guess it depends what kind of fandomy things you're looking for? Skins isn't over; a fifth and six series have been confirmed, and there's going to be a new cast for those.

I finally got around to seeing this episode, and...oh dear. I wish I understood this show's obsession with ending people's character arcs by sending them to America. The Thomas/Pandora Harvard thing was just bizarre. The fact that it took them this long to give Pandora anything at all to do just reminded me how much I'd missed her during the rest of the series.

Didn't really care for the Emily/Naomi reconciliation (and seriously, what was UP with Naomi's hair?) because it just felt a bit cheap and, as you said, a total retcon.

On the plus side? At least Freddie wasn't in it.
