Obligatory Skins Gen 3 Reaction Post

My big gripe is that they introduced us to the actors instead of the characters. But, whatever, I can still make snap judgements based on pictures alone!

Alex Arnold. He looks cute and likeable, I guess. I've decided that he's the one who's going to die in the penultimate episode of series six, just because someone has to.

Sean Teale. Apparently plays the main character, Nick? I'm guessing his character will be in the vein of Tony and Cook. I already don't care.

Sebastian De Souza. He looks okay, but whatever, I'm not in it for the boys.

Freya Mavor. There was another picture of her where she looked really cute, and if I weren't so lazy I'd dig it out. Apparently she plays Mini, girlfriend of Nick (?), who gets hit on by the tiny lesbian. Let's hope she reciprocates.

Jessica Sula. A potential candidate for the tiny lesbian! I hope it's her; she's cute.

Will Merrick. Looks like he ought to be playing Percy Weasley. Probably the token geek, y/y?

Laya Lewis. Everyone keeps saying she looks like Jal; she doesn't, really. Anyway, I'm really pleased that the cast is less white this year.

Dakota Blue Richards. LYRA FROM THE GOLDEN COMPASS. (They had a different picture of her on the E4 site earlier, right? I'm not just imagining things?) I'm still weirded out by the fact that she's no longer twelve, but I think I'm looking forward to seeing her on the show. Anyway, I guess she's the other potential tiny lesbian. She's kind of adorable, but makes me feel old.

All in all, I'm... kind of intrigued? At the moment it's hard to see them as a Skins cast instead of a bunch of normal teenagers, but I'm interested to see what kind of characters they'll be playing. Still have unwavering faith in Jamie Brittain's ability to fuck it all up, but obviously I'll be watching anyway.

Yeah, they changed the picture of Dakota.

I am already shipping Mini/Jessica's character. Come on, Skins. Don't disappoint.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I already kinda ship them too! I so hope Jessica is the tiny lesbian. (I feel like that ought to be capitalised at this point: The Tiny Lesbian.) Dammit, I really didn't want to get invested in this cast but I know it's going to happen.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm getting seriously invested in the as-of-not-yet-existent Mini/Jessica's character ship. I need E4 to give us character bios and stuff so that I don't get my hopes up too high. Gdi.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll think they'll probably string us along for ages tbh; we all know what they're like. SIGH.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, Heather Hogan on AE said that she's gonna be revealing more about The Tiny Lesbian at some point soon. To which I say, WANT NOW PLZ.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, really? AWESOME. \o/

[identity profile] old-wp.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Jessica is super cute. I also hope she is The Tiny Lesbian TM.

I'm going to be disappointed if she's not! I wonder when we'll find out character info?

[identity profile] liev.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They look okay I guess. Looks aren't that important to me, and I still remember seeing Naomi's promo shot for the first time and being sort of underwhelmed. And look how that turned out. At this point the thing that'll decide if I'll continue watching is the script quality and interesting characters, and with JB being in charge I'm certainly not overly hopeful.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there'll probably end up being just enough good bits to keep me watching even if it sucks overall. It depends whether JB has learnt any lessons from series four or if his head is still so far up his own arse that he doesn't think there need to be some major changes in the way he structures a series.

Dakota looks so adorable in that picture. Huh. I too am surprised to see her all grown up. And Jessica seems really cute. S2 scarred me for life, though -- at this point they'd have to like, bring Emma Watson on to make me watch this show again.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If you thought series two was bad you should've seen series four; it was abysmal. (And yet I still watch, IDK why.)

Emma Watson is too old for Skins now, but it would've been amusing to see her play a typical Skins teenager after being Hermione.

I'm not in it for the boys

Shocker ;)

I agree, I guess Sebastian is there to appease the straight girl/gay guy demographic (because I don't see the appeal at all in Sean Teale)

Do we know for sure there's a lesbian...because, dammit, that does make it slightly more likely that I'll watch/*lame desire for representation lame*

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is a lesbian; AfterEllen mentioned something about having more details about her soon. They probably only included one because Naomi and Emily were so popular.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Do we think there's any chance of there being a boy gay to go alongside Mini Lesbian? I'm assuming the chances are low since most shows tend to have one or the other and then assume that that's their diversity quota entirely filled, but it would be nice to see Skins buck the trend...

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't heard for sure either way, but I agree that it would be nice. It's been a long time since Maxxie, and he never had very much to do in the first place. Fingers crossed!

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually now trying to think of shows that had gay men and lesbians in them and had the two interacting to any great degree, and subtracting shows that weren't specifically about gay people in the first place. I'm not coming up with much...

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I can't think of any. Oh, what about Torchwood? I thought everyone was kind of gay in that (without it being a specifically gay show) but I've never actually watched it so I don't know for sure.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Torchwood kind of used "everyone is bi!" as a way of getting around it. I don't recall there being any exclusive lesbians in it - Gwen kissed a girl (under the influence of alien pheromones) and Tosh had a brief relationship with a woman (again, with some sort of alien influence) so it's up for debate, I guess.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay, if it's alien sex pollen I guess it doesn't really count. So TV still needs more shows that feature gay men and lesbians coexisting. After all, I hear that that does sometimes happen in real life.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, "alien sex pollen". But yeah, it does seem that there's a bit of a gap, doesn't there? (Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your entry with this, but it literally just occurred to me...)

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No need to apologise! I mean, I think if Skins wants to try and be representative of real teen culture then this is the sort of gap they need to be addressing. If they have no gay boys in this cast then that'd be only one gay boy out of 25 main characters, and that's terrible.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-08-06 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good point, actually - I hadn't looked at it like that. Although I guess, on the gay storyline front, I'd rather they gave dealt with one character really well than took two and handled it poorly. Of course, in an ideal world they'd have more than one and handle them both well, but that does seem a bit of a tall order all things considered. :)

[identity profile] lovely-noise.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sebastian looks cool, Freya is from Edinburgh so she has my home-town vote and Jessica is MUCHO HOTTNESS.

Also - Mini/Jessica will be a popular ship, I can guarantee that now without having seen a scene of anything.
