It's sort of a sequel to LoM, yeah. I never saw LoM (I did watch some later, but not all of it). You don't really need to have seen LoM to watch A2A (anything you don't know can easily be found on Wikipedia).
The last episode of A2A may just be the best episode of any show that I have ever seen. IMHO, nothing compares to it. It's just amazing.
It does have a bit of a slow build, but I promise you, by the end of S1 you'll just be dying to see more. It's really engaging and clever. It reminds me a little bit of a grown-up/80s version of Veronica Mars, actually.
