Obligatory Thursday Skins Post

Okay, I... am not sure how I feel about this episode. I think I need to watch it again to collect my thoughts but right now... IDK. :/

One thing I UNRESERVEDLY LOVED: Katie asking Emily to stay. OMG, that whole scene had me flailing so hard! TWINS ♥

And, you know, Emily and Naomi had some cute moments too! Like the goggles, and "ours", and the random Mexican party. (Does Naomi just have ponchos and fake moustaches lying around? LOL FOREVER.) But they were kind of overwhelmed by the stupid manufactured angst which didn't even seem NECESSARY. You want to write a story with Naomi cheating and Emily getting jealous? Fine. You don't need to add a SUICIDAL STALKER to that mix. (Also, lol, I already wrote Naomi cheating on Emily at an open day interview. FIRST YOU STEAL NAOMI & EFFY ON DECKCHAIRS FROM ME, NOW YOU STEAL THIS.) I don't know, maybe I'll appreciate it more when I watch it a second time.

I also kind of hated that Emily managed to make Sophia's death All About Emily. Like, her brother was RIGHT THERE, upset because his sister KILLED HERSELF, but instead it's all about Emily's angst? Blah. I kind of feel like they had a potentially really interesting story here with Sophia and Naomi and they just told it completely the wrong way.

On a shallow note, I still hate Naomi's hair. Mostly I just find it hard to see her as the same Naomi she was last series. :(

Freddie was such a self-centred douche when Emily was trying to talk to him, SURPRISE. And, I'm sorry, but I hate Cook and am not looking forward to his episode next week. (PLEASE tell me that wasn't Cook/Naomi in the trailer. DNW.)

I'm not even going to talk about Freffy. Although I appreciated Effy's screentime nonetheless. As for Katie's new boyfriend, THAT NEVER HAPPENED OKAY HE DOESN'T EXIST LALALA I'M NOT LISTENING. And, I'm starting to worry that we're not going to get the epic Katie/Effy confrontation that we NEED. Maybe in Katie's ep?

I feel like I'm being really negative, when I didn't actually dislike it all that much? Definitely needs a rewatch.

Random note to finish: I have the same toothbrush as Naomi!

I am so upset right now, I can't even think.

I am mostly... upset that I'm not more upset, if that makes sense.

Because I can't think properly the only real comment I have to make is on this;

Random note to finish: I have the same toothbrush as Naomi!

YOU HAVE NAOMI'S OLD TOOTHBRUSH. You bin scrounger you. :D

EXCUSE ME I STOLE IT FROM SOPHIA'S CADET LOCKER. Second-hand stalking, oh yes.

S'OK, I TOOK THE GARIBALDI WRAPPER.

I feel that overall it was a rather well done episode and that Kat and Lily were phenominal. It's just the cheating bit that I have issues with - I find it hard to ship pairings where one of them has cheated (also, their sex scene was not what it could have been)

but, I loved the Fitch family and especially Katie and Papa Fitch (he gets and A+++++)

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed about the sex scene.

I don't mind the cheating thing in principle, but I don't like the way they chose to tell the story. If we'd seen it happening, from Naomi's perspective, I think it would have made more sense, but instead they chose to make it a mystery to be solved and the emotions behind it were reduced to a couple of minutes of exposition at the end. It didn't quite work for me.

[identity profile] karatam.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if a subject like cheating is brought up slowly, and not just "Oh, by the way I cheated on you before the show even began", I can appreciate it as a storytelling device

ME TOO.

I'm mourning the hair so badly, dude. IT USED TO BE SO PRETTY.

I was so disappointed I couldn't even ptoperly sleep tonight. At this point, I don't want Emily to forgive Naomi at all, like ever, because the trust is gone and to make matters even worse Naomi was a hypocritical lying cunt about it all. And the cheating didn't even happen on impulse, instead Naomi instigated it, took the girl home and presumably slept with her there, all while not being drunk in the slightest. How could she look Emily in the eye after this? Not to mention I really don't care under which circumstances the CN kiss next week happens, right now Naomi shouldn't be kissing anyone, no matter how troubled she is.

This stupid cheating plot twist is really getting old, apart from Maxxie/whatshisboyfriend and ironically Anwar/Sketch every couple had to deal with cheating, which isn't realistic and just plain ass lazy writing. A lot didn't really add up in this episode either, like why would Naomi sell(?) drugs to a girl she's 'familiar' with and then make out with Emily without being concerned about the truth coming out? She wasn't really affected by her death either, which I found strange, especially considering it was heavily implied that Naomi was the last reason this poor girl needed to kill herself :(

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
all while not being drunk in the slightest

Actually, one of the pictures Sophia drew shows them drinking wine. Not that it magically makes everything better if they were drunk, but I think it maybe softens the blow.

I think Naomi was affected by Sophia's death, but she's the sort of person who hates to show her emotions so she just sort of closes down and puts on this uncaring front to protect herself from being vulnerable.

Man, I have that toothbrush too. Poor gal just has too many stalkers for her own good.

Ha! Ubiquitous toothbrush is ubiquitous.

Julia I just watched it and i'm so upset

also, like, i don't even mind if the show broke them up

but this manufactured bullshit cheapens everything

I can't even....I want to walk away from this bullshit show right now. Fuck it.
brb/hating Naomily and skins

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm feeling a bit better about it today, after a lot of thought about Naomi and why it makes sense for her to do it. But I don't know why I'm always so surprised by the manufactured drama, because that's always been Skins' M.O. (hello, Sid and Cassie). I think fandom has ruined me.

If things don't turn around by Katie's ep I'm not sure what I'll do. Just... why is it not as awesome as fic??

[identity profile] holeybubushka.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Bear in mind I saw this....two hours ago (time zone plus a full work day on Friday) but....you know what doesn't make sense? Naomi kisses this girl. Fine. Lies about it to Emily. Fine. Sells her drugs...not fine, but I'll live. Finds outs creepzoid-i'm-more-annoying-than-sketch is stalker her and then proceeds to have happy fun time sex with Emily? NO ONE WOULD DO THAT. Fuck them for using Naomi as a plot device. That doesn't make any sense.

Fandom has ruined this show and this couple. No, wait- the show did that all by itself

I have a finished story (for reals) which I don't give a fuck about because I've obsessed over this show for nine months and its nothing but a pile of poorly written tripe. You're clever- can't you see how ineptly the whole naomi thing was handled?!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I think I need to break up with this show :(

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I knew how to quit this show, but I never could.

I do agree that the Naomi thing was ineptly handled, probably because the character focus was given to Emily instead and told as a detective story, which is a ridiculous way to frame the narrative and detracts from the story they're trying to tell. The sex with Emily could have made sense if it was about Naomi desperately clinging to her in the wake of the stalker reveal, holding on as she feels everything unravel; I'd have to watch it again to see if it could be read that way. Although honestly, I felt like the sex scene was more fanservice than a plot device.

I'm not trying to say the storytelling wasn't flawed, but (sex scene aside) I've come to the conclusion that the whole thing was painfully in character for Naomi, and it actually makes me love her all the more. (Not that what she did wasn't terrible, but I get it.)

[identity profile] holeybubushka.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it fairly recently and the sex scene was GIGGLY. Oh, like, la la, this girl I stalked me, but you're fit so let's get to it.

And yeah...maybe. But it was bullshit after bullshit- she sold her drugs as well? Isn;t the cheating enough?

And the sex scene....just ruins it. Like....I can't get over how awful that is. Finding out the girl who cheated with killed herself over you and then hhaving giggly sex with your unknowing girlfriend? No one except a callous bitch would do that.

Emily should break up with her and never take her back. Seriously.

The show did the worst thing to this couple- make Naomi act like a jack ass and created manufactured angst. I wish I wasn't so angry, but I am. Maybe I need to sleep on it to, I guess.

Wait, how is it in character for Naomi? ( I enjoy your perspective because you're a writer and have a solid graps on character progression) Because to me, they really went too far in making this character unlikeable (and make Emily the victim, when, and I say this as an Emily fan, she's a bit of needy, insecure, pedestal-loving, immature prat. Why couldn't Emily's insecurities ruined them?)

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I rewatched the sex scene and you're right, it is difficult to explain. :/ Which is a shame, because in the scene before where they look at the locker, Naomi obviously *is* really freaked out about it. So the progression from that to giggly sex doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I think I'm going to watch the episode again and then do a big meta post about why I thought the lying and cheating was in character for Naomi.

[identity profile] fab-fairy.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I just really liked the ep, but can't get over how upset I am. I don't know what to do. I think I need some time and distance to fully assess the situation.
On another note: every ep should have more Fitch family awesome. THEY ARE AMAZING.
