Hey, flist! Does anyone have any film recommendations? Because while I watch a LOT of TV I hardly watch any films at all, and now that I've run out of TV shows to marathon I thought I'd start watching films instead. :D I'm open to pretty much all genres except horror, and I especially like films that pass the Bechdel test.

Seriously, when I say I hardly watch any films at all I mean that you could recommend me something really mainstream that everyone and their mother has seen, and I probably won't have seen it. So, yeah, any suggestions at all would be appreciated!

[identity profile] muiriosa.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh so many suggestions but can you give a couple of examples of films you really enjoyed? I'll work from there :P

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I always find it hard to think of my favourite films! Um, Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favourites, and recently I watched and loved Whip It and Mulholland Drive, so I like quite a wide variety of stuff. I'm open to pretty much anything. :D

[identity profile] muiriosa.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the reminder that I need to watch Whip It!

If you liked Pan's Labyrinth, you might enjoy a few of del Toro's other films. The Devil's Backbone is good but might fall into the dreaded horror genre!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256009/

Watched a decent british film from last year during the weekend as well, Fish Tank:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232776/

And for the good old comedy, you can't beat Pixar! If you missed Up from last year or Wall-E from the year before, they're both definitely worth a watch.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, thanks for those! I missed both Up AND Wall-E, heh.

[identity profile] fab-fairy.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it depends what sort of thing you like. If you fancy something upbeat, maybe Amelie or Dodgeball if you want a decent but standard comedy; 10 Things I Hate About You is a good rom-com type film; Serenity (yes, I love Joss Whedon :p) for sci-fi - or the new Star Trek if you missed that; Leon is cool, it has evil Gary Oldman, Jean Reno as a hitman and little Natalie Portman; The Terminator films are awesome; The Rocky Horror Picture Show is loltastic, as is Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (quite possibly Alan Rickman's greatest performance lol). Oh and Dangerous Liaisons - Glenn Close and John Malkovich are amazing.
Right, hope that helps, I'm sure there are loads I've missed off but it's difficult just off the top of my head :p

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Amelie! I haven't seen that but really want to, so that'll definitely go on the list. I've seen a couple you've mentioned (LOVE Serenity!) but I'll check the rest out, thanks. :D

[identity profile] fab-fairy.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol - thought you might've since you watch so much tv, but glad I could help :)

[identity profile] 00emsy00.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
slumdog millionare because EVERYONE has seen it and it is AMAZING

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, that's actually one I've seen, but thanks anyway!

[identity profile] 00emsy00.livejournal.com 2010-03-22 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I totally forgot about this. And sorry, was I too mainstream?
Okay, you should watch benjamin button, that is good and mainstream.
Mamma Mia, just be drunk first.
And if you have seen them then enhanted, yeah it's half cartoon but it is awesome and mainsteam.
Yeah, I really suck at this and everyone else gave you brainy movies that I have never seen, sorry

[identity profile] old-wp.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
From the films I've watched this past year: If you're in the mood for something serious, I recommend Hunger, A Prophet and most especially The White Ribbon. An awesome black comedy is the Cohen's A Serious Man (IDK if it's out, but I can up for you if you're interested). Looking through my list, I haven't watched a lot of comedies. Like, at all. LOLLL Oh, well, The Runaways today!!

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I've never even heard of those first three, but I'll check them out. I think I saw an upload of A Serious Man so you won't need to up it for me, but thanks anyway. :D I'm really looking forward to The Runaways but can't find any info about a UK release date anywhere!

[identity profile] muiriosa.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It probably won't be released here til late summer/early autumn...

I bought The White Ribbon last week actually, it's on the agenda for this evening!

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that's a shame. It'll be online before then so I'll probs just download it when I can.

[identity profile] myfirstkitchen.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
My favourites: Brief Encounter, Casablanca, Roman Holiday, Ghost World, Velvet Goldmine (shh, don't judge).

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the recs! Ghost World looks like the kind of film I'd enjoy.

[identity profile] blurubberband55.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I have a friends who never watches movies either. Have you seen Titanic, because if so you’ve got one up on her. I’m sitting here staring at my (rather large) movie collection so I’ll toss out some diverse suggestions you might enjoy...not all of these are what you’d call good movies; some are just straight-up silly entertainment...

Comedy gold: Drop Dead Gorgeous (mockumentary about a small-town beauty pageant. basically an all-female cast. fucking hilarious.), Zombieland (best zombie comedy since Shaun of the Dead…which you should also watch), Saved! (teenage Christian girl gets knocked up by her gay boyfriend. religious hypocrisy made funny!)

Action packed: City of God (life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. PHENOMENAL movie.), Children of Men (dystopic future where humans have become infertile. sounds like a cheesy premise but it’s really not.)

Drama-rama: Girl, Interrupted (Angelina Jolie is crazy and it’s awesome), The Reader (a little slow, but with Kate Winslet being her usual amazing self), The Virgin Suicides (lol, self-explanatory title.)

Fantasy Fun: Stardust (my fave fantasy film of the past decade, full of Claire Danes and Michelle Pheiffer hotness)

So Bad They’re Amazing: The Fifth Element (um...scifi where Bruce Willis and Mila Jovovich save the world. completely ridiculous, completely awesome), Starship Troopers (earth is at war with bug aliens. hilariously badly acted satire of militaristic culture.)

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have actually seen Titanic! *pwnz* But I've only seen a couple of the other ones you mentioned (Girl, Interrupted and Stardust, both of which I loved) so I'll check out the rest. Thanks for the recs!

[identity profile] violet4120.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, The Bechdel Test is amazing. Going by that test, some movies from the past few years that I've enjoyed: Inglorious Basterds, Jennifer's Body, Zombieland, Baby Mama, Changeling, Sunshine Cleaning, Children of Men, The Devil Wears Prada, and Little Children.

Not specific to that, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my all-time favorites. And [livejournal.com profile] blurubberband55 has a great list.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The Bechdel Test is amazing, but super depressing at the same time. Thanks for the recs, I'll check out the ones I haven't seen yet. :D

[identity profile] shadowings.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
PLEASE WATCH CHILDREN OF INVENTION. You probably won't find it online (I haven't searched because I just bought the DVD) because it's like, actually low-budget/indie, but it features cute Asian children... who wake up one day to find their mommy has disappeared and are left to fend for themselves... but the ending is nice! If still kind of sad. But like, it's really good and not racist/makes racial minorities invisible, and if you can actually find it I would recommend watching it.

Although if a girl and her mother don't count as two "women" then it doesn't pass the Bechdel test, but they don't talk about boys and stuff.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think "women" in the Bechdel test just means females, they don't have to be adults, so it sounds like it definitely counts! I just had a quick search and could only find a cam version but I'll keep it in mind and try and find a better version if I can.

[identity profile] cheapantique.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
For pure entertainment; Drop Dead Gorgeous, Tank Girl, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Up, Adventures in Babysitting (aka a Night on the Town), Don't tell Mom the Babysitters Dead, Drop Dead Fred

Romance: Fried Green Tomatoes, Romancing the Stone, (500) Days of Summer, Loving Annabelle, The Last of the Mohicans, Titanic is a must-see if you've never seen it.

Hallem Foe, Gloria (the original version), Foxes, Matilda, Twelve Monkeys, Girl Interupted, Howard the Duck (so bad its good), Willow, and everything James Cameron has ever made. I could go on forever...

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the recs, loads I haven't seen there! Man, I have a really long list now, but that's definitely a good thing. :D

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I would recommend, Mesrine (part 1&2) it's a french subtitle though... also A Prophet is in French subs but also awesome. In-fact that one is probs better.
Also lighter films include: Walk the line, Law Abiding Citizen, Looking For Eric, This is England, Hot Fuzz (for the lolz).
IDK.. there's so much!

Is there any TV shows that you would recommend, because by film/tv ratio is about 65/35.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fine with subtitles, so I'll check those out. :D Um, I have a ton of TV shows I could recommend - what sort of thing do you like?

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool :)
I like all sorts.. Skins (obv), Parks & Recreation, Madmen, HIMYM, 30 Rock, Dexter, Sex and the City (oh dear), Peep Show, AdFab, Gossip Girl...
That may or may not be helpful, but I'm pretty open minded so I'll be chuffed with any recs. :)

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay! I've been watching Greek lately, it's a lulzy American college drama that I kind of love. Chuck is lots of fun too; it's a silly spy comedy/drama. If you're not watching Legend of the Seeker you MUST, it's a cheesy but awesome fantasy show with lots of hot women in leather. For something more serious, The Good Wife is a really interesting legal drama about a politician's wife who goes back to work as a lawyer when he's embroiled in a sex scandal. What else? White Collar and Nurse Jackie are both good shows. For something a bit older, Veronica Mars is awesome and an absolute must-see.

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh, nice one, thanks.,,
Yes, I'm watching Legend of the Seeker and it's ridiculous but I lol at nearly every ~serious utterance... what an amazingly cracky show :)
I've seen ads for The Good Wife, and it does look really interesting so I think I'll give that a go. Also, I think I missed out on Veronica Mars so I'll have to give that a go too. :)
Greek and Chuck.. also noted, thanks! Good job it's the holidays soon. I prefer to watch series stuff when a big night out has ensued and I can whip out a nice cup of tea and chill the next day. :)))

Can I recommend Shortbus? It's fantastic and full of sexytimes, homosexuality, glitter and very moving AND funny - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8A1dwEhSMY trailer here!

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually seen Shortbus but I agree, it's awesome!

[identity profile] sgtmian.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
oh man. but there are so many movies. some of my favorites that haven't already been said, then. that have women in them, heh.

naissance des pieuvres, a league of their own, kissing jessica stein, heathers, frida, boys on the side ...

favorites that don't have much more than one main one:

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, all the real girls, hard candy, peter pan (2003), lucas ...

the thing about people asking for movie recommendations is i can never remember the movies i really, really liked. meh.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I have the same problem with remembering movies I've liked. Anyway, thanks for the recs! Quite a few there I haven't seen.

I am Sam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EROTbDCr5ag. Little Dakota Fanning is ridiculously good.

Gattaca:

The trailer makes the film seem like a superficial thriller but its really better than that.

Playing by Heart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIqSInFQ_d8
It's better than the trailer. promise.

Forgot, there's one more -
