(no subject)

- I've been kind of quiet lately, and I feel like a lot of people on my flist have been too. How are you all? Enjoying your Easter weekend? I don't really celebrate Easter now that I'm apparently Too Old For Easter Eggs, but I'm enjoying my five day weekend. \o/

- The other thing that's awesome about this Easter weekend? NEW DOCTOR WHO TONIGHT! I actually stopped watching New Who about three episodes into Martha's series but a couple of months ago - after the Christmas specials, I think - I marathoned the rest and fell in love all over again. Stephen Moffatt wrote all my favourite episodes from the last few series so I'm excited about him being the new showrunner, and I think Matt Smith's going to be a good Doctor. I'm most intrigued about Amy; I loved Martha and Donna so much, so she has big shoes to fill as far as I'm concerned, but like I said - optimistic!

- I'm kind of sad that Didi got voted off American Idol this week, except not very because she seemed to be singularly determined not to live up to her potential. Oh well, at least Siobhan managed to avoid the bottom three despite her total vocal meltdown. (I still love her, but she needs to knock it out the park this week.) Starting to suspect that fucking Lee DeWyze is going to win the whole thing, though.

- I think it's awesome that Anna Paquin came out as bi, and that she did so in a classy and understated way. Is it wrong that I always become suddenly so much more interested in a celebrity when I find out that they're queer? Because I totally do.

I'm sad about Didi leaving. Even if she didn't live up to her potential, she was still miles ahead of Tim (and better than Katie IMO)

I have her "Playing with Fire" on my iTunes, and it's really very good :)

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, she's definitely better than Tim or Katie! I think she had a few really good performances and a lot of potential, but she squandered it with some bad song choices. :( I would have liked her to stay around longer, but I'm not as sad as I would have been a couple of weeks ago. (I agree, her 'Playing With Fire' was great.)

Dr Who was amaaaazing!
Matt Smith isn't David Tennant, but I was surprisingly not bothered by this. Sharper plot, better cinematography. I'm so glad the ship has been handed over to Moffatt.
Amy is a little strange and very quirky but I think they tried to emphasis her ~issues with what is true, so I'll just label her as endearing for now.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Matt Smith was really good - at no point did it feel strange to have a new Doctor, he just slotted into that role perfectly. I like Amy so far, although I could have done without her being a kissogram and the whole wedding thing.

I don't think it was Moffatt's best, but for an introductory episode it was really good.

[identity profile] supergoodtimes.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree it wasn't his best but it was a nice subtle and effective introduction into a new chapter.
I didn't mind the kissogram thing, even though the odds of that actually being that characters occupation is kind of unlikely (maybe if she wasn't living in a small village and most the residents that she could work for seem to know her).
The whole wedding thing takes me back to the Donna days, and I think they just wanted to create this hugh sacrifice that she makes for the Doctor but it was really "rolls eyes*.
End of the day though, roll on the next ep! :D

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of felt like the kissogram thing was just a lulzy way to get her into a police uniform rather than meaningful character backstory, but we'll see. The wedding thing really feels like treading old ground - Rose had a boyfriend she left behind, and Donna had a wedding, and I just feel like they could have done something more interesting in that respect.

It's gonna come down to Crystal and Lee and fucking Lee is going to win. I really don't get the appeal. He did have a good performance this past week, but he sounds exactly like a zillion other male artists already on the martket and has no personality whatsoever.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get the appeal either. I mean, I guess he can sing (although he doesn't always bother to sing in tune), but I don't like his voice at all and there's nothing remotely interesting about him. He has a couple of albums on iTunes and I couldn't even get through a whole 30 second clip, his music was so dreary.

[identity profile] boppingalone.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't blink at the new Doctor; I was expecting to feel like he was trying too hard or just not as good as David Tennant but he just eased he way right in there which I'd say is a huge acheivement given the shoes he had to fill.

I totally have a thing for natural red-heads so right now Amy is getting two thumbs up from me but I think I'll reserve proper judgement until a few episodes in.

I wanted to hug Anna with my legs when I heard she came out. Welcome to the folds (lol, ew.) I'm not even going to pretend I don't find someone ten times more appealing when I find out there gay, even when prior to their coming out I had no interest in them. Because I'm shallow or something? IDEC :D

[identity profile] boppingalone.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
they're gay*

Jesus, I didn't get a sensible shower today.

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree - it really felt like the same old Doctor just with a new face. Great casting choice there.

Amy's hair is so pretty! Even if she never really takes off as a character there's always that. ;)

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who's shallow over gay celebs! I mean, I kind of liked Anna before because of True Blood, but I like her so much more now.

[identity profile] pensierobello.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
But better pitched and less maniacal.

[identity profile] lazy-daze.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's awesome that Anna Paquin came out as bi

OMG I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THAT IS FREAKING AWESOME. The world needs a) more out celebs and b) more out bi celebs who aren't doing it to appear more cool/sexy/titillating, etc. Which I know sounds harsh of me as everyone has the right to openly or privately identify with whatever sexuality they want but I am sure you know what I mean about some 'bi' celebs. :/ :/ :/

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I know exactly what you mean! And the cool thing about Anna is that she didn't have to come out - she's engaged to a dude, so it would have been super easy for her not to say anything, but she did it anyway for a PSA. \o/

[identity profile] liev.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I've adored Anna since my seven year-old self saw her in Fly Away Home all those years ago, so this only made me love her more. I would've never ever guessed though, but it certainly is a nice suprise and feels a lot more genuine than any declaration made the likes of Megan Fox and even Lady Gaga (sorry bb, I know you love her).

How's your Easter weekend going so far?

[identity profile] botherd.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I never would've guessed about Anna either. And I think that's what makes her coming out refreshing, because it's not like there were a ton of rumours about her, or people trying to out her, and she's not past the peak of her career and only coming out when people no longer care.

I was going to give you a long treatise on My Thoughts On Lady Gaga's Sexuality but I'll spare you. ;)

My Easter weekend's been nice, but fairly uneventful. Had some family members over, stuff like that. How's yours?

[identity profile] trickstertroll.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure how I feel about the new Doctor Who yet. I haven't caught up enough to really give a good opinion. Probably just not ready to give up my old love for David Tennant yet.

Is it weird that every celebrity I find attractive comes out at some point? It's like the most ridiculous gaydar ever. But yeah, once you know they get infinitely more attractive. So proud of that little Kiwi/Canadian kiddo.

[identity profile] liev.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to work this weekend. I'm not too big on any of these 'special' days (christmas, easter, or even my birthday) but it was still weird to know that you're basically locked away whilst the rest of the world is searching eggs and whatnot :/

lol and don't feel like you have to spare me from anything, I'm always interested to hear your opinion.

[identity profile] andthatisthat.livejournal.com 2010-04-06 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I didn't know about Anna Paquin! That's awesome.

I was sad about Didi even though, as you quite rightly said, she really wasn't living up to her potential. And I pegged Lee DeWyze to bland his way right through to the final from the very beginning, and Chris laughed at me and said it wouldn't happen. The thing is, for once I don't actually want to be right...
